Method Homes: Sustainable Living in a Matter of Months

The experts over at Method Homes exhibited “Annata,” their newest deluxe custom-made House, at this year’s Dwell on Design conference in downtown Los Angeles. The company specializes in creating high-end prefab homes that prioritize sustainability and good design. To maximize efficiency and minimize hassle, Method Homes builds all of their houses and commercial structures in-house before shipping them out and erecting them onsite. The Annata model was conceived of by Chris Pardo Design: Elemental Architecture. To accommodate those with an interest in both in and outdoor living, Method Homes has created two different versions of the Annata: one that consists of two modules and one that consists of three. The home’s optional third module adds a second bedroom, spacious garage, and small outdoor terrace to the design, increasing its total footprint from 1,260 to 1,830 square feet. Annata’s incorporation of outdoor space makes it ideal for California’s wine country and coastal areas. The two-module version of this prefab was on display at this year’s Dwell on Design conference and took just one day to erect — and that includes the time it took to install all its fixtures and fittings!

At the event, a Method Homes spokesman told Dornob: ”Everything is complete when shipped. Our core mission is sustainability and energy efficiency.”

The final price of a Method Home can range anywhere from $180 to $300 a square foot, depending on the buyer’s choice of materials and intended construction site. For instance, the model featured in the company’s Dwell display was designed for a customer who wanted a holiday home in Santa Rosa. To make the house more suitable for that function and location, it was equipped with high-end materials and custom-built fittings.

No matter what kind of house you’re looking for, you can rest assured that Method Homes will build it with the environment in mind. The company explains: “Method works with design partners who share our values, which means designing and constructing homes and commercial structures that are using innovative and responsible practices. We achieve our goals through focusing on a tight building envelope, integrating energy-efficient systems and products whenever possible, and reducing waste through building in a centralized factory location where materials can be reused and recycled.”

Each Method home boasts the following sustainable features:

• Minimal or no VOC paints and adhesives, which means less chemical off-gassing
• Above-code insulation
• No UA formaldehyde
• Quiet and efficient ENERGY STAR-certified ventilation fans
• FSC-certified hardwood floors
• Locally harvested lumber
• Dual-flush toilets
• Low-flow water fixtures
• Pre-wiring for solar panels

The Method Homes model of innovation begins with the process of getting to know the client. During an in-person or over-the-phone meeting with the design team, you’ll be asked a series of questions about the site you have in mind, the things you’re looking for in a home, and your budget. The company will then draw up some rough cost estimates and financing options for you to consider. If you like, you can even hire an external architect to design the house for you! Method Homes will provide them with a set of guidelines on how to construct it using a modular approach.

The company aims to complete every project it takes on in less than four months, which is about 60 percent faster than the average time it takes to complete a traditional site-built house. What could be better than having a high-end, sustainable, and stylish home delivered straight to your door in a matter of months?
