The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has revealed his intentions to join the main opposition party in the state, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The former senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District revealed this via an online interview with Arise TV on Thursday in the state capital, Port Harcourt.
Sen. Abe was a chieftain of the APC but decamped to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2022 to run for the topmost seat of the state alongside strong contenders like the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, under the PDP (backed by the past Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike); Tonye Cole under the APC; and Beatrice Itubo under the Labour Party.
Revealing his reason for decamping to the APC, Magnus Abe said that his purpose in rejoining the APC is to build a formidable political party that can help all members of the state and be in a better position to support the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
"I don't want it to look like everything I am doing is about running for governor; sometimes you let events play out.
"The last elections are over; I withdrew my case in court, and my intention for doing that was to allow peace to reign in the state and concentrate on governance and development in the state.
"It is not about me; it is about better lives for Rivers people and opportunities for them.
"I am not going to the APC because I want to run for governor; I am going to the APC because I want to build a formidable political party that can help all of us.
„Also, I want to be in a better position because I want to continue to support the president (Bola Tinubu), whose policies and programs I advocated for before he became president, in the firm hope that being in the same platform will give me an opportunity to do so without appearing to be at divergence with my political party (SDP)“, Senator Magnus Abe said.
