The former governor of Anambra State and the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party in the just concluded 2023 elections have said corruption in Nigerian society is a threat to the country's growth and development.

The 62-year-old politician made the statement on his verified X handle, formerly known as Twitter, today regarding the International Anti-Corruption Day commemorated every 9th of December.

Mr. Obi urged Nigerians and the government to reflect on the impact of corruption on the nation, adding that corruption has stunted the growth of the country.

"As the global community marked International Anti-Corruption Day yesterday, we need to soberly reflect on the effect of corruption in our society and on our country.

"Corruption has become the greatest threat to our national existence, especially our democracy, peace, and progress. It has immeasurably stunted our development as a  nation, he tweeted.

Peter Obi, who is arguably the most famous politician in the country presently, rose to the heights of fame after the 2023 presidential elections, which saw him garner support and votes from all corners of the country.

However, despite the wave of political change by the 'Obidients' (supporters of Mr. Peter Obi), the Nigerian entrepreneur came in third in the elections, according to results announced by Nigeria's electoral body, INEC.

This is coming at a time when the country is ranked 150 out of 180 corrupt countries in the world and 24 out of 100, according to reports released by Transparency International (TI) in the year 2022.
