Are you ready? Apple is giving the new iPhone system, iOS 17, to all the people with the right iPhone today.
Your iPhone does most of the work, but you can prepare a bit before you get iOS 17. Read to find out how.
Before you start, see if your iPhone can use iOS 17
Not every iPhone can use iOS 17. You need an iPhone as new as the iPhone XR or XS, from 2018.
The iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd gen and up), iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and the new iPhone 14 can all use iOS 17. The iPhone 15, coming on Sept. 22, already has iOS 17.
Next, back up your iPhone before getting iOS 17
iOS 17's new stuff is cool, but be careful before you switch. Back up your iPhone first. Then you can go back to iOS 16 if you don't like 17.
Your iPhone backs up by itself when you sleep, plugged in, and on Wi-Fi. If it's off, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, and press Back Up Now.
You can also use Finder on a Mac to back up your iPhone. Plug in your iPhone, open Finder, pick your device, and make a backup. Apple says to save your backup, so it doesn't get replaced.
After you back up, do these three things:
Charge your iPhone. iOS 17 needs more than 50% battery, so plug in. It also needs over 20% even when you're plugged in.
Use Wi-Fi. You can't get iOS 17 with mobile data, so find Wi-Fi before you start.
Clear space. iOS 17 is big, so delete stuff in Settings > General > iPhone Storage to make room.
How to get iOS 17 when it's ready
Once you're set, get iOS 17. When iOS 17 is out, open Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone. Wait, then hit Install Now for iOS 17 (or Install Tonight if you want to wait).
If it shows iOS 16.6, press Upgrade to iOS 17, then Download and Install for iOS 17. Enter your passcode to start.
When it downloads, restart your iPhone. iOS 17 installs after that. Follow the steps, and you'll have iOS 17.
