APRIL 1966
"Right, once more. Only this time don't blink."
Making the list at Number 96 is this Cover from April 1966, featuring Horsham's Assistant Gatekeeper, Carmel Scanlon. Shown preparing to place the lamp on the crossing gate at Horsham Station, Miss Scanlon had been highly commended for detecting and reporting a hot box on a passing goods train. Her parents, also gatekeepers at Horsham, relocated from Dimboola, proving that many Victorian Railway employees were second-generation railwaymen and women.
This cover is an example of early success in championing women in the workforce. Still, I bet poor Carmel wishes she hadn't blinked.
