Carl Bloch - The Transfiguration of Jesus
 Mark 9:2-13

The transfiguration marks the end of two eras and the beginning of a third, namely the end of the Law (represented by Moses, who appears in the vision) and the prophets represented by the greatest prophet Elijah (who never died but assumed into heaven and also was part of the transfigured vision). Both the prophets and the law are to be replaced by the central figure in the revelation, our Lord and Savior, who came to both reaffirm and clarify the law.

Carl Bloch- Agony In the garden of Gethsemane, Matthew 25:36-46

This painting depicts a scene before Jesus' arrest, trial and subsequent crucifixion, our Lord spend a few hours in this garden praying over what was to come. In the garden were his favorite apostles (Peter, James and John), all unfortunately fast asleep

Matthew 4:1-11

After His baptism and before starting His ministry, our Lord stayed in the wilderness for 40 days and nights, and was tested at the tail end of his stay. The church takes this as a model for Lent and the Advent, preparing ourselves for his death and resurrection in the former and his birth in the latter.

This is based on a parable that Jesus gave on the importance of planning and being prepared, for his return while always expected is not known to the faithful with certainty. We should live our lives as He instructed, and thus being prepared to receive him at any time.

This is the first time that Moses encounters YAWEH and is told to take the mantle of leadership to rescue the Jews from slavery in Egypt

Hicks- Noahs Ark Genesis 7:1-10

Noah was commanded by God to build an ark and take in all animals two by two. The earth 

was destroyed in a flood fed by rain and underground water that run for 40 days and nights;
the ark remained afloat for much longer until dry land was eventually found.

Copey - Eli and the boy Samuel
1 Samuel 1:21-28

 Hannah, Elkanah's wife, dedicates her son (Samuel) to Eli The high priest on being granted her wish for a child. He becomes one of the greatest prophets in Israel.

Crist - Judith with the head of of Holofernes Judith 13:1-10

Judith was one of Israel's Judges. She single handedly stopped the Assyrian invasion by decapitating their general who was beguiled by her beauty.

Gentileschi Artemisia - Lot is inebriated by his daughters
Genesis 19:32-35

 A painting showing the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah where Lot and his daughters sought refuge in caves nearby. Fearful that the human race had been destroyed and thus their ability to bare children, they inebriated their father in order to lie with him biblically.

Pieter - David handing a letter to Uriah
2 Samuel 11:1-26

King David, out of lust for Bathsheba, Uriahs wife, consigns him to his death on the war front by having his generals place him in the thick of the fighting in order to remove any challenge to him taking his wife. It was a despicable act, but God is merciful to those that seek His mercy.
