The resurrection Christian art

Bloch- The resurrection
Luke 24:1-12

In the absence of the resurrection event, Christianity would have no foot to stand on. We believe that Christs resurrection is a precursor to our own resurrection at the end of the age.

  b)

Christ tempted

Repin- Christ tempted, Matthew 4:1-11

In this painting the devil tempts using the world, the flesh and pride. Christ is offered bread, power and the world as a whole, if only he would worship him. This is no different to the assaults we all face today. What profit is there to gain the whole world, for the loss of an eternal soul?

  c)

Madonna in sorrow

Giovanni- Madonna in sorrow, John 10:25-27

There are numerous paintings of this nature, pointing at Mary's sorrow at the death and crucifixion of her son.

The Boy Jesus found in the temple

Hunt- The Boy Jesus found in the temple, Luke 2:41-52

At about the age of 13, Jesus strays from his parents caravan while in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. After 3 days journey on their way back, the realize that he is missing and they thus return to the city. They find him in deep discission with the pharisees and scribes in the temple. On questioning him, he asks, "did you not know that I must attend to my fathers work"? Cheeky of him... though its followed by ... "he was obedient to them henceforth...

The rich man in hell, reaches out to Lazarus in heaven

Tissot- The rich man in hell, reaches out to Lazarus in heaven, Luke 15:13-23

The sum total of ones life lies in the words of our Lord, "what did you do for me while you lived? Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me". A life of serving the self, leads to a life separate from God in the heavenly realm. The rich man realized this too late.

f)

Parable of the Lilly in the field

Valckenborgh- Parable of the Lilly in the field, Matthew 6:25-35

Its a hard thing isn't it, to trust the Lord implicitly for ones material sustenance. He uses the lilies in the field and birds of the air as an example; they rely on no one, yet they live based on Gods natural abundance.

g)

The good Samaritan

Watts- The good Samaritan, Luke 12:25-32

Samaritans were considered apostates by the Jews having mixed their religion and lineages with that of their Assyrian conquerors. They were derided as practicing an imperfect Jewism, and thus as unfit to even physically come close to Practicing Jews. it was from such an impure derided person, that succor was forthcoming from, despite two practicing Jews passing him by.

Jesus Mocked
Manet- Jesus Mocked, John 19:1-16

Passion week was a torturous time. The very people that he taught and healed, are the same ones that conspired to persecute and kill the Messiah. The roman soldiers flayed him brutally and proceeded to mock him by laying a wreath of thorns on his head and clothing him with scarlet robes, the color of nobility.

  i)
Crucified

Velazquez- Crucified, Matthew 27:32-56

He died so that we could live

 j)

Jones- The annunciation, Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel announces his miraculous birth to our lady.

 k)

Agony in the garden
Adrian- Agony in the garden, Mark 14:32-72

Prior to his arrest and prosecution, our Lord spent his last free moments praying in the garden in Gethsemane

l)

The annunciation
Solimena- The annunciation, Luke 1:26-38

The annunciation is made to Mary by the arch angel Gabriel, that to her a son will be born; an incarnation of God on earth.

 m)

Flight to Egypt
Flight to Egypt, Matthew 2:12-21

They fled the jealous and infuriated Herod, who for fear of losing his throne, set out to kill the messiah, resulting in the massacre of the innocents in Bethlehem.

 n)

Kiss of Judas
Anthonis- Kiss of Judas, Matthew 26:47-56

I have never quite understood Judas' motives. Initially greed, but thereafter the shame of what he had done led him to suicide. Why he would ill himself even after repenting seems unfortunate. It is not for me to say, but Gods mercy knows no limits; so hopefully even in his case, mercy was shown.

 o)

Agony in the garden

Blake- Agony in the garden, Mark 14:22-72

As he awaits the start of His passion, the Lord s assisted by angels to endure the anticipated moments of betrayal, loss and pain to the very end.

 p)

Jesus walking on the sea of galilee

Bril- Jesus walking on the sea of galilee, Matthew 14:22-33

Having complete faith is no easy feat. If Peter was unable to sustain his walk on water, when he could actually physically see the Lord, how hard it must be for those who do not see him but trust in his teachings?

 q)

The raising of Lazarus

Rembrandt- The raising of Lazarus, John 11:38-44

There were three that Christ raised from the dead; Lazarus, as depicted above, the son of the widow of Naim and the little girl who was the daughter of a synagogue head. If this is not the workings of Gods son, then what else can it be?

r)
The annunciation

Bloch- The annunciation, Luke 1:26-28

A beautiful depiction of the annunciation to Mother Mary on the birth of our Lord!

Enjoy
