As Kenyan elections show face, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, 22.1 million Kenyans will cast ballots on August 9 to choose the nation’s fifth president, members of the National Assembly, senators, and county governors (IEBC).
On Tuesday, theGazetteNGR gathered that polling places will open at 6 a.m. local time and shut at 6 p.m., with voting being extended in areas where it won’t have finished.
Only Kenyans who are 18 years old and older are permitted to vote, however, prospective voters must first register.
Although the IEBC has seven days to formally declare the winner of the elections, results are anticipated to begin trickling in starting on Tuesday evening.
According to the constitution, to win the presidency, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the Votes cast overall in the elections and at least 25% of the votes in at least 24 of the 47 counties.
If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote in the elections and at least 25% of the votes are cast in 24 counties, a Runoff is planned within 30 days of the primary election.
The first and second-place candidates will compete in the runoff, and the winner of the new election will be the one with the most votes.
A president-elect is sworn in on the fourteenth day following the day the presidential election results were announced. And only if there isn’t a runoff election or a challenge to the results before the Supreme Court.
The current president, Uhuru Kenyatta, is unable to run because he has already served the maximum number of two terms allowed by the constitution.
The former prime minister and seasoned opposition leader Raila Odinga and current vice president William Ruto are the two front-runners.
The president of Kenyatta is supporting Odinga in the fiercely contested elections. The most recent polls indicate a close race between Ruto of the Kenya Kwanza (Kenya First) Alliance and Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja (Resolution for Unity) One Kenya Coalition.
To assure a round-one victory and avert a runoff, both candidates have urged their supporters to show out in huge numbers.
