For the sitcom creator, the finale of the legendary Big Bang Theory set was an emotional one.

From the show’s very beginning, the malfunctioning elevator in Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny’s apartment complex has played a significant role. In addition to being a fascinating background feature that comedy viewers have always found intriguing, it also played a significant role in the plot for the show’s entire run by paving the way for the addition of the recognizable staircase.

Though it was necessary to have the staircase dismantled once the comedy ended, it provided space for some of the most memorable moments.

Since the apartment building’s stairs were the only means of transportation, this allowed for some fascinating discussions as characters ascended the stairs. This was also the primary motivation for the elevator plot device and led to many of the iconic moments between the characters, such as those involving Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco).

Even while the malfunctioning elevator wasn’t given much attention until The Stairway Implementation in season 3, its presence in the background gave the program a new depth.

Showrunner Bill Prady was quite upset to see the Warner Bros. set being demolished because of how important the staircase has been to him and the other showrunners:

I think one of the things that I’m going to find incredibly sad: so, Stage 25 at Warner Bros. we built the Hallway and it is floors 2, 3 and 4 redressed. The stairs that go down, in order to make those stairs the floor of Stage 25 is concrete and they brought in jackhammers, and they jackhammered out the floor and they dug!

They poured steps down there, so at some point this summer [after the show ends] I guess they’re gonna come and fill that in. That’s all I think about right now, is watching them fill that in. So, that’s not quite an answer to your question, but it is a story about stairs.

The set allowed for a lot of fascinating character interactions, so it’s bad that it was destroyed. However, the showrunners made care to include an important detail in the sitcom finale.

The Finale Finally Gave a Resolution to the Broken Elevator

The showrunners found the staircase’s collapse to be quite dramatic, but it did set up the famous broken elevator’s resolution. When the elevator door finally opens in the sitcom finale The Change Constant, Penny is shown inside declaring that the elevator has been fixed. In addition to providing viewers with catharsis, the fixed elevator enhanced the closing scene’s sense of TBBT’s demise.

Prior to beginning filming the climax, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco expressed their desire to see the elevator fixed, emphasizing that it would be the ideal way to bring everything together. IMDB
