I’m Standing On A Million Lives is a drama and fantasy isekai anime based upon a manga of the same name written by Akinari Nao and Naoki Yamakawa. It is being brought to the medium of anime by Studio Maho Film. It is a fairly new studio with a small catalogue and barely any acclaimed titles under its wing. The studio’s first full-length title was 2019’s “If it’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord”.

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 was directed by Kumiko Habara, whose prior experience with anime includes Assistant Direction credits in 12-Sai and Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki. The series is also known in original Japanese as 100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru Season 2.

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 Review- The Plot

There are levels to awfulness. Most things are awful for a variety of different reasons, just as most things are awesome for different reasons. No one can call Tommy Wiseau’s masterpiece “The Room” awful in the same way as M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender”. Despite being awful, things can be worth watching in a “So Bad It’s Good” kind of way. Many people can derive pleasure from watching such movies because they have a certain charm that is hard to replicate.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are shows and movies with literally no redeeming qualities. Not only are they not good, but they aren’t even bad in a car-crash sort of way. Some movies, TV shows, books, and anime just lack anything of value. There is no pleasure to be derived from watching them or critiquing them. They aren’t even worth laughing at because they aren’t comedic in that way. Those pieces of media offer absolutely nothing to a viewer, except mediocrity.

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 belongs in that category, as there is nothing redeeming about this particular isekai anime. The plot remains just as uninspiring as ever, as storylines that should have reasonably been resolved in less than two episodes take six each, and even then, fail to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Deus Ex Machinas and unrealistic power surges galore as the show even fails to stay true to its video-game-like isekai roots.

The directions the story takes make no sense, and their purpose remains muddied even as the season comes to an end. The series does manage to deliver on two semi-decent moments, one in the first episode and another in the last, but the rest of the season is pure nonsense that serves no purpose. Perhaps Million Lives Season 2‘s biggest crime is that other than introducing two new characters, the series is still no farther to reaching its end than when Season 1 ended. The Ogre and Blood Dragon arcs were horrible and boring, and you will probably lose some brain cells while watching them.

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 Review- The Characters

Oh boy, I don’t know where to start with this one. The characters who were already bad in Season 1 have somehow gotten even worse. I didn’t think it was possible to hate the glum and idiotic protagonist, Yuusuke Yotsuya, even more. But here we are. His philosophy towards the ranking of lives makes no sense, and even still, he flips and flops between hating the world and wanting to save it with reckless abandon.

Two new characters are introduced, Keita and Glenda. Keita is annoying and hard-headed, while Glenda is the only rational and witty character in the show. All the old party members return with even less to do this time around and feel more useless because of it. Iu is mostly treated as eye candy, Kasue is as useless as she has ever been, and the less said about Yuka, the better. The villains are also useless, and the show even tries to do the cringe-worthy trend of humanising them by giving them a backstory. Ew.

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 Review- Art and Music

The animation of I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 can be described in one word- Generic. Like the rest of the show, nothing stands out as being particularly good or even remotely interesting. The action scenes are uninspiring, and the studio has put in the bare minimum effort to animate the parallel universe. That ensures that everything looks empty and lifeless, and even the character designs don’t stand out. I couldn’t pick out Yuusuke from a lineup if I had a gun to my head.

However, every cloud has a silver lining. The music lineup of the show could be just as insipid as the rest of it, but it is saved by one fantastic piano arrangement that plays in the first episode. That piano arrangement was the best part of the entire anime, and just think how much ground that statement covers. Just one 2 minute music piece is all that was good about an entire 12 episode anime. At least the first season had good opening and ending themes. I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 doesn’t even have that luxury.

Verdict

I’m Standing On A Million Lives Season 2 was awful and didn’t have a singular redeeming quality. Check this one out only if you don’t value your time or intelligence.
