Demon Slayer Mugen Train Anime Episode 3 Overview

One of the most popular anime of our time, Demon Slayer, is back on our screens with the anime version of its Mugen Train Arc. Ufotable will slightly alter this adaptation from the movie released in 2020 to a huge critical and commercial reception, including new footage and an entirely new first episode. The Mugen Train Anime arc will run for 7 episodes, after which the show will resume its normal storyline with the Entertainment District Arc.

Ufotable is the studio behind Demon Slayer’s anime adaptation and will be directed by Haruo Sotozaki. It is to be noted that the first episode was Anime original, which means that the story isn’t originally what was written in the manga. You can read our review of the movie while you’re at it. Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 3- The Review

I cannot stress this enough- all you get by watching these episodes over the movie is the opening, ending, and the final bit at the end after the credits. There are no noticeable extra scenes, no new lines of dialogue, and no changes to the story. You can always go back and rewatch the movie if you want to know what’s going to happen in the next episode since it is all the same anyways. For lack of a better word, Mugen Train Episode 3 is a pointless existence.

Now, the actual episode had a few problems of its own, the most notable of them being how unfunny it was. I realise that comedy is subjective, and tastes in comedy will differ whenever they are talked about. However, it’s not like I can avoid talking about it since it is nearly always a major part of any Demon Slayer Episode. I’ll try to make it as objective as possible, although I’m not making any promises.

The comedy in Demon Slayer Mugen Train Episode 3, and even in the whole show, is of a singular variety- loud equals funny. That’s not particularly rare, especially in shounen anime, but the quality still varies from show to show. A recent show that did comedy right was Jujutsu Kaisen, and it did that by creating actually funny moments that warranted a loud reaction by the characters. Demon Slayer, however, doesn’t feel like it needs to do anything like that. It seems to believe that it can make two characters shout their lungs out whenever they are on screen, which makes them automatically funny.

Zenitsu and Inosuke are one-note characters because of this. This is why the only comedic moment that works in the entirety of Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Episode 3 is when Nezuko bangs her head on Tanjiro to wake her up and hurts herself. The show does emotional moments great, as evidenced by Tanjiro’s and Rengoku’s dream segments in this episode. Thus, it perplexes me even more why the show keeps using these unfunny comedy bits to pad its story out.

While the content of Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 3 wasn’t particularly fresh or riveting, it was still a well-executed part of the show that probably brought tears to many an eye. I wasn’t one of those, as I have already seen all of this before. You probably have, too. I would like to know somehow how many people hadn’t watched the movie before starting the anime show, and I’d be willing to bet that the number is less than 10%. Oh well, people seem willing enough to let Ufotable get away with this kind of laziness.

Verdict

While the content of Demon Slayer Mugen Train Anime Episode 3 was great and worth giving a shot if you haven’t seen it before, I fail to see what this experience brings to anyone who has already seen the movie before. Also, if the show kills off Zenitsu and Inosuke, it would be one thousand times more watchable.
