Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3- Overview

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 Title Card

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 is produced by Kyoto Animation as part of the Summer Anime 2021 Lineup. The series acts as the direct sequel to its 2017 original. It is being directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who is also well known for directing various other Kyoto Animation anime such as Air and Clannad. Season 1 director Yasuhiro Takemoto also shares billing for the director after his untimely death due to the Kyoto Animation arson tragedy.

Episode 2 picks up right where episode 1 left off, with the series taking a more narrative-driven approach rather than the first season’s mostly standalone episodes. All the usual suspects are also back, including a new character named Ilulu, who now appears to be a permanent cast member. The series is also known as Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S and Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 Review- The Plot and Characters

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 Handshake

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 felt confused at times. It was like the writers had to fit in 3 separate plotlines into a single episode and scramble to do that. That resulted in a somewhat garbled yet still fun episode of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. In a sense, this episode showcased the true slice-of-life nature of the anime for the first time in this season, which can, in no way, be described as a bad thing.

I guess this is more due to the prior two episodes being very strictly plot-driven, having the introduction of Ilulu alongside her dealings with the rest of the cast. The third episode is what the season will really be like, it seems. After being mostly neglected in the previous episodes of the season, the beloved side characters finally get their moments to shine in this episode.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 Lucoa and Ilulu

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 started with a deep dive into Ilulu’s childlike mentality and how she wasn’t really allowed to delve into that part of her character when she was in the dragon world, which was heartwarming and did a lot in establishing her character as one that deserves to stay as a regular in this anime.

While that was well and good, in the same episode, we had the young ‘uns playing a game of monopoly, Tohru making a maid costume for Kobayashi, Tohru trying to find a hobby, and Rika and Kanna shenanigans. While some of the other episodes might have had a similar number of plotlines, this episode didn’t seem to flow as well as the others.

Tohru

Rika, Lucoa, and Ilulu all had great showings this episode, with Lucoa being better than in most other appearances. Also, Tohru rocked out with an electric guitar. 5 stars out of 5.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 Review- The Art and Music

While the art and animation were just as good as the rest of the series, I have to give special kudos to this episode’s music. The piano number that played in the first half was exquisite, and I’d like to know the name of the piece ASAP. The opening and ending of Season 1 also made a surprising yet welcome appearance in the episode.

Also, Tohru, in her bid to become an idol, belted out a delightful tune proclaiming her love for Miss Kobayashi, which also served as the ending to this particular episode. Overall, the music was a major upside to this episode.

Verdict

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 3 was different and somewhat confused. That which cannot be denied is this- It was still Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid through and through, and you can’t go wrong with that.
