Why Do Some People Hate Watching Anime?

Tags: anime

As someone who watches way too much Anime in their spare time, there is one question that often comes to mind: Why do some people hate anime? As something that seems so easy to love, it’s hard to imagine someone despising it with a fiery passion. And yet, I know several people that absolutely hate anime.

I’ve tried to force them to watch some of my favorite thriller anime and sci-fi anime series, and yet they remain steadfast in their dislike. Because of this, I dug into why they feel this way to try to understand. Here are some of the most common themes.

They Don’t Like Reading Subtitles

Out of everything on this list, this is the most common theme out of the people I questioned. Not everyone wants to read a TV show or movie while trying to watch it. It can be hard to watch anything in a foreign language if you aren’t used to it and it forces you to focus on every moment. If someone doesn’t like watching foreign content in general, they are likely going to dislike subbed anime.

They Don’t Like The Voices

I watch both subbed and dubbed anime and equally enjoy both. But both options can be problematic for some folks who aren’t used to it. One of the most common things I’ve heard is that the high-pitched voices in some of the dubbed versions can be off-putting. For subbed anime, I have also heard people say they dislike how the Japanese language sounds. It’s hard to disagree with people’s auditory opinions on just about anything.

They Don’t Like Animation

Although Japanese animation and western animation offer completely different styles, they are both still animation. If someone doesn’t like cartoons, animated movies, or any sort of art that moves on a screen, they aren’t going to enjoy anime. Although it can be frustrating when people don’t love beautiful hand-drawn art in motion, some people just prefer live-action.

They Think It’s Too Weird

There’s obviously a lot of Japanese culture that slips into anime. Whether it’s off-brand humor, dialogue, or unusual references, it’s not for everyone. Although there is quite a bit of Netflix Original anime that offers Japanese-style animation with American themes, it’s still something that puts people off. Admittedly, there are also some absolutely whacky tropes and characters, so this can be understandable.

They Haven’t Watched The Right Anime Yet

Now this is a slippery slope to go down. While there are folks who just simply haven’t watched the right anime to get them hooked, some people will just never like it. That being said, I have brought a few of my good friends over to the world of anime by introducing them to the right series or anime movie. With streaming platforms like Netflix producing Japanese-style animation more and more, the genre is starting to become more accessible to a lot of people.

Do People Have to Like Anime?

If you found your way to this article, it’s likely that there is someone in your life who hates anime. As someone who married a girl who cannot stand watching it, I’m here to tell you that it’s okay if they don’t like it. Not everyone you love needs to share all of your interests, even if it’s something you love deeply. While I do think it’s worth trying to find the right anime to get them interested, there’s no reason to keep pushing if they don’t. Besides, why waste time getting someone else to enjoy something when you could be enjoying it yourself!
