Sports Story: When is the Golf Story Sequel Coming Out?

If you’re anything like me, you probably played Golf Story, fell in love, and are now hungry for more. This unique sports RPG from Sidebar Games is one of my favorite indies on Nintendo Switch and I have high hopes for the release of the sequel, Sports Story.

When is Sports Story coming out, though? It was originally meant to launch in mid-2020, but when it got delayed the developers didn’t give anyone a new release window. And while there have been a few updates about the game on Twitter, we still don’t know when Sports Story is going to be released.

Everything we know about Sports Story

There haven’t been that many updates about Sports Story, but you can find most of them directly from the Sidebar Games Twitter account. We can expect Sports Story is going to be an RPG with excellent writing just like its predecessor. Here’s what I could dig up about the gameplay itself.

Multiple Sports in One Game

One of my favorite aspects of Golf Story was the addition of frisbee golf within the game. Sports Story takes that to a whole new level by adding multiple sports into a single game. There will still be golf, but it appears there will also be soccer, cricket, fishing, volleyball, and tennis. With all of these different sports, it will likely be a much longer game than the original indie title.

It has even been confirmed that you will be able to embark on a full tennis career that spans multiple zones. This information would lead me to believe that in addition to golf and tennis, there might be other sports with full story arcs intertwining throughout the RPG. If this is the case, it can explain why we still don’t have a release date for the game

More Than Just Sports

We all know that Golf Story was more than just a sports game. It was a full-on RPG worth playing for the dialogue and adventure alone. According to the details listed on the Nintendo website, Sports Story will have espionage, mini-games, buried treasure, and even dungeons. It’s unclear how extensive these aspects of the game will be, but it’s likely they will be integrated into the overarching story as you advance the plot.

It’s possible the success of another indie title, Stardew Valley, could lead the developers to create a full dungeon crawling experience within the game. However, it’s more likely that it will just be integrated into various quests you take as you move through each unique zone.

There Will Be Multiplayer

The details on the Nintendo page say that Sports Story will be playable by up to 4 players. It’s unclear if this will be a co-op campaign or just a smaller multiplayer element. Since the story seems to be pretty focused on dialogue and individual challenges, it seems unlikely that there will be a multiplayer campaign.

If I were to take a guess, I’d say it’s most likely the game will offer a competitive multiplayer option. It seems most likely that the developers would build in a way to play tennis and golf with friends. It’s possible that this could be expanded to other sports in the game, but this seems the most likely.

Some Core Characters Will Remain

It’s unclear how many characters from Golf Story will make their way into the sequel, but we know at least a couple will make it. The main character will be the same, and we have also seen both Coach and your main rival in a teaser video.

In addition to these cross-over characters, we can also likely expect new rivals and outlandish quest-givers. We also already know that at some point you will get to meet the queen.
