The 5 Best Elder Scrolls Games to Play in 2021

The Elder Scrolls series has produced some of the most influential games of all time in the RPG genre. With games like Skyrim redefining open-world exploration, it’s no surprise that many of the previous Bethesda titles in the series are still worth playing. With Elder Scrolls VI arriving sometime in the future, we highly suggest digging in deep to the epicness of Tamriel.

If you want to go as far back as Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall or Elder Scrolls: Arena, you can pick up a free download from the Bethesda website. Those games can be difficult to get through without the power of nostalgia, however, so we suggest you some of the more recent titles below.

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

IGN: 9.5/10
Metacritic: 84%

As the one of most well-known open-world games in history, Skyrim is worth playing over and over again. It’s rough mountainous landscape is a gorgeous backdrop to an overall fun and action-packed RPG. If you can only play one Elder Scrolls game in the series, then let it be this one.

Many of the things that make Skyrim great are fairly widespread among open-world games nowadays, but that doesn’t make them any less enticing. With one of the most epic video game soundtracks, customizable characters, unique races, and endless dungeon exploration, there’s so much to take. There are plenty of side quests and dragons to keep you from finishing the game in a hurry, but the main plot is quite enjoyable in and of itself.

If you’re looking to pick up a copy of Skyrim, it’s available pretty much everywhere except your mobile device. You can find it on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles.

2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

IGN: 9.3/10
Metacritic: 94%

Oblivion was hands-down one of my favorite games when it first came out in 2006, and that hasn’t changed with time. You should play Oblivion before Skyrim, but it’s okay if you haven’t.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion features many of the same elements as Skyrim. You get to explore an open-world, collect weapons and spells, and interact with the people of the Cyrodil for quests and interesting conversation. The main drawback of the game is quite simply its age, but it’s still great for an older game.

Your best bet is to play this game on PC, but you can likely find it for Xbox One and PS3 if you’d prefer.

3. The Elder Scrolls Online

IGN: 7.8/10
Metacritic: 71%

Despite a rocky start back in 2014, Elder Scrolls Online has really come into it’s own and is thriving as an MMO. Set in Tamriel, you can travel to nearly every province taking on quests and playing with friends.

It’s certainly not on the same level as Skyrim, but it has the heart of an Elder Scrolls game shining through. While one of the main draws of the title is being able to play with friends online, there are plenty of solo quests to take on if you just want to do some adventuring.

If you’re looking to play ESO, you can find it on PC, PS4, and Xbox.

4. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

IGN: 9.4
Metacritic: 87%

Oblivion isn’t the first Elder Scrolls title to enthrall the gaming world. If you’re wondering if you should go all the way back and play Morrowind, I don’t blame you, it’s still a fun game..

That being said, it’s harder to go that far back. The graphics are awful, the gameplay is slower, and worst of all: Fast travel is not nearly convenient enough. Is it worth playing this game in 2021? Sure. You’ll just need to get over the mechanics and overall aesthetic to fully enjoy it.

Your best bet for playing Morrowind would be to pick a copy on PC, but you can also play it on Xbox 360.

5. The Elder Scrolls: Blades

IGN: 5.4
Metacritic: 42%

While it’s almost always better to play games on console, there’s nothing wrong with getting some Elder Scrolls time on your mobile device. Elder Scrolls: Blades is a free-to-play mobile game that lets you fight bandits, explore dungeons, and explore a small part of Tamriel.

Despite some pitfalls, like encouraged microtransactions and a the lack of an open-world environment, Blades offers a little something pretty good and different with slimmed down gameplay for your phone.

You can get this game for Android, iOS, or for Nintendo Switch.
