Do You Need to Play Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Before Skyrim?

The Elder Scrolls games are one of my favorite series in existence. And despite having to wait for what feels like an infinite amount of time for Elder Scrolls VI to arrive, I still enjoy playing most of the games in the series. But if you’re someone who has never played any of the games before, should you play Oblivion before Skyrim?

The short answer is no, you don’t have to play Elder Scrolls IV before diving right into Elder Scrolls V. Sure, there’s some lore from the previous games that crosses over, but Skyrim takes place in an entirely different part of Tamriel.

However, if you find yourself looking for more games like Skyrim to play, I highly suggest going back to previous Elder Scrolls titles despite their age.

Should You Play Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2021?

Yes, you most certainly should. Oblivion was the game that got me into RPGs in the first place and remains one of the greatest open-world games of all time. While it isn’t quite as expansive as Skyrim or nearly as beautiful, it has elements that make it entirely unique and wonderful. To make a case fo playing this groundbreaking 2007 title, I’m going to break it down into 3 main reasons.

It has Almost Everything Good About Skyrim

Though the graphics, voice acting, and video game soundtracks aren’t nearly as epic as Skyrim, many of the basic elements that make for a great Elder Scrolls game started here. You play as the chosen one, collecting weapons, spells, and armor along the way as you battle for your life in the open world. You also get to choose from a variety of different paths, or just do all of them. Want to be the high wizard? Done. Want to be the grand champion of the arena? Done. Want to become a vampire? Done.

The depth of the game draws you in, and you end up getting lost in the details. Despite it’s age, you can see how this game really set the stage for Skyrim.

It’s Set in a Land Plagued by Demon Portals

This — and I can’t stress this enough — is the most amazing part of Oblivion. One second you’re escaping prison, and the next you’re wandering into an Oblivion gate to stop demons from destroying a town. The juxtaposition between barren demon landscape and the beautiful countryside was one of the biggest draws of the game for me.

Where Skyrim has dragons and Draugr, Oblivion has demon princes and unruly hellscapes. Sure, there are other towns and quests, but there’s nothing more satisfying than entering an Oblivion gate and shutting that puppy down from the inside.

The Shivering Isles Expansion Is Better Than Skyrim

I remember when I first finished Oblivion and found myself wanting more right away. Unfortunately I had a wait a bit for the expansion to come out, but when it did I was not disappointed. This expansion remains my favorite part of any Elder Scrolls game ever.

The realm the expansion sends you to is divided into two sections: Mania, which is bright and colorful with just a hint of madness, and Dementia, which is of course dark and depressing. The realm of madness is ruled by what is of course, a crazy, but delightful character.

With up to 40 hours of extra game play, it is absolutely worth adding on to your cart on Steam.

What About Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind?

Oblivion isn’t the first Elder Scrolls title to hit the gaming world, but it was the first one that truly defined the open-world genre. If you’re wondering if you should go all the way back and play Morrowind, I don’t blame you.

That being said, it’s harder to go that far back. The graphics are awful, the gameplay is slower, and worst of all: Fast travel is all but non-existant.

Is it worth playing this game in 2021? Sure. If you want more Elder Scrolls content in your life, it is still a great game. You’ll just need to get over the mechanics and overall aesthetic to fully enjoy it.
