Experimenting with Upside Down Photography

Experimenting with Upside Down Photography

The first step to taking a great photo involves holding your Camera the right way and taking a picture of your subject top to bottom. But what if you hold it upside? Or what if you intentionally take a picture that would come out Upside down? It’s a weird technique but it can get some unique shots.

Here are some upside-down camera Photography tricks you can try.

How to Capture Upside Down Photography

There are a few ways to capture upside down photography. These are as follows:

Use a Camera Lens: If you look into a camera lens, you will notice that it shows an inverted view of what’s in front of it. This is one way to get inverted pics.

Use a Crystal Ball: A crystal ball will also work well at inverting images. You can take a picture of the ball reflecting the images upside down or you can use the crystal ball in your image to show right side up and upside-down elements.

Have the Subject Go Upside Down: You can also have your subject go upside down by hanging off a tree, doing handstand or lying on the floor with their head to the camera.

Post Processing: Another suggestion is to turn your photos upside down when you are processing them. You can use editing programs to turn photos 180 degrees and to other custom angles.

How to Take a Good Upside-Down Photo

Here are some tips that will make your inverted shots come out great.

Lighting: As with any photo, it’s important to get the lighting right. Natural light is always the best, but if you unable to acquire it, artificial is recommended. Be sure to focus light on the part of the image you need illuminated with the rotated image in mind.

Composition: Composition is another element that’s always essential in photography but especially so in inverted photography. Flip everything you know to be sure to get an adequate amount of top and bottom space in your shots.

Angles: Angles can play a big role in helping inverted photography look more interesting. When shooting, don’t just take straight on shots. Experiment with a variety of angles to get unique effects.

What Happens if I Turn My Camera Upside Down?

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, turning your camera upside down will not get you upside down images. I mean, when you look through your roll, you may have to rotate the picture, but once rotated, it won’t look like an inverted image.

However, it tends to show a more direct angle and will not stretch your face out more than necessary. It’s a recommended technique if you are taking selfies.

Shooting upside down can be a lot of fun and there are so many ways to do it. Now that you know the techniques, you can start experimenting with a variety of looks.  What will you be doing to achieve the aesthetic?
