How to Pose Your Groomsmen for a Great Wedding Photography Shoot

Wedding photography is a great way for photographers to make extra money. If you can shoot creatively, you will set yourself apart and get even more work.

When it comes to shooting groomsmen, it can be hard to get fancy. After all, you’re working with men who tend to stay away from being fun and frivolous. All the same, you can still get some interesting shots. Here are some ideas that will get you headed in the right direction.

Getting Ready

Getting ready shots aren’t only for the bride. You can take pictures of the groomsmen tying each other’s ties, cleaning off each other’s jackets and more. Checking cufflinks, waistcoat adjustments and general mirror poses will capture the excitement of the moment.

Giving Gifts

It is customary for the groomsmen to give presents to the groom. Capture these precious moments by taking pictures of the present and the expression on the giver and recipient’s faces as the gifts are exchanged.

Ready Shot

Once the groom is fully dressed, be sure to take a picture. Show him gazing in the mirror for optimal effect.

The Journey

Other must haves include pictures of the groom’s party walking from their headquarters to the venue. There are so many ways to make this fun.

You can take the picture conga line style, do a slow motion ‘gangsta’ walk, AKA Reservoir Dogs or have them disco dance or moonwalk to their destination.

Pose the Group

You can also take a few pictures of the groomsmen outdoors before or after the wedding takes place. You can add character by posing them like the groom’s favorite album cover. Have them sit on a wall and take a picture of just their legs showing their colorful socks and shoes. Or get a shot of them taking a selfie of themselves.

Superhero poses always work well too.

You can also add interest in your lighting and composition. For example, you can get on the ground and have the group hover above you for a cool and interesting shot. You can backlight the photos for a dramatic effect. You can post them on the stairs or take a shot from inside a room showing them out the door or window.

With the Bridesmaids

Add a bit of sex appeal by having the bridesmaids get into the shot. It will add color and beauty to the image.

Get the Details

It’s always good to get the details of the wedding from the groom’s perspective. When getting ready, take pictures of his shoes, belt and tie. If there is anything interesting about his place setting, capture that as well.

Get Individual Shots

You should also get individual shots of the men in the groom’s party. In doing so, get cute or Avant Garde while letting their personalities shine through.

Wedding photography is a great way to earn extra income. The ideas in this article will help you take your groomsmen’s ideas up a notch ensuring you stand out for your creativity. What do you integrate into your wedding shoots to make them more interesting?
