How to Use a Mood Board in Your Photographic Endeavors

Those who work in creative industries have probably become familiar with the term Mood Board. A mood board is a collage consisting of a collection of images. It can be used to share ideas or form ideas.

For example, in photography, you can create a mood board to make sure you and your clients are on the same page. You may also create your own mood board if you’re struggling with an idea and aren’t sure how to express it.

Mood boards can include anything from photos to color swatches to print outs and more. Read on to find out how you can create one to express your vision or better understand others.

What Does a Mood Board Consist Of?

A mood board can be placed on anything, but a corkboard usually works best. That way, you can easily pin on images to express your vision. Mood boards can also be created on apps like Pinterest.

When it comes to the images you add, the sky’s the limit. You can pin on photos, printouts, color swatches, graphics and more. However, you will want to limit the mood board to 5-15 items. If you add more than that, it will be too overwhelming, and you may lose sight of what you want to express.

How to Make a Mood Board in Pinterest

While you can make a physical mood board, it may be best to create one with an app. That way, it will be easy to share. If you are using Pinterest, here’s how its done.

First you will need to get the Google Chrome Plugin called Pinterest Save Button. Once the tool is downloaded, you will get a small button on the corner of your screen of all the images that appear in the browser. Click the button to save these photos to your mood board.

You can also download pictures directly from your computer to the app. To do this, go to your Home Feed and click on the Create Pin Button. This will allow up to drag, drop or click in the box that appears to upload the file.

After you upload the file, you can create a title and caption for the image. You can also add a destination link. Then hit ‘Save from Site’ button and you’re good to go.

You can create multiple boards and name them so you can keep track of several projects. Once created, boards will automatically go public, but you can turn on the “Keep this board secret” toggle if you’d rather keep it to yourself.

How Do You Share a Mood Board?

If you are creating a project for a client, it’s essential to be able to share your mood board with them. To do this, go to your profile and click ‘Boards’.

Next, click on the pencil icon at the bottom right corner of the mood board you want to share. Scroll down to ‘Collaborators’ and enter the email of the person you want to share with. You can also use their Pinterest handle if they have one.

Next click Done and it will send a notification to the person letting them know that your board is ready to share.

A mood board goes a long way in getting people on the same page for a photography project. Now that you know how to use one, you are sure to get your clients the results they are after. How will you be integrating this tool into your professional endeavors?
