Maybe you’ve already painted with Boysen Acrytex before or maybe you’re thinking about using it for the first time for a paint project. Whichever of these you are, the Boysen Technical Service Department has a few insider tips, tricks, and advice for you.

On Cobwebbing and How to Avoid It

One of the more common things that occur with Boysen Acrytex compared to other paints is cobwebbing. Cobwebbing is a coating defect where web-like material appears on the surface as you’re applying the paint. This happens when paint dries too quickly on the surface. Though this may not be too much of an issue for products like Boysen Permacoat Latex, which can also be used on exterior concrete walls, it does occur more frequently with Boysen Acyrtex.

To counter cobwebbing, Boysen experts advise to taking care not to overcoat the paint. So, do not repeatedly go over an area with your roller or brush. Just a few strokes will do. If cobwebbing remains an issue, you can also opt to thin your Acrytex with Acrytex Reducer at a max ratio of 4:1 respectively.

Achieving Different Textured Finishes

Here’s a trick from experienced painters: Boysen Acrytex Cast can be applied with a spray gun to achieve textured finishes.

First, prime the surface with Acrytex Primer. Now for the texture. Acrytex Cast is first thinned with Acrytex Reducer to a sprayable consistency. Then, using a mortar gun, the resulting mixture is sprayed to the surface. Fine, medium, and coarse textures can be achieved depending on the distance and the pressure of spraying. The topcoat is then applied afterward.

If you do decide to give this a go, note that you will need to slightly flatten the finish after application. Do this by taking a wet wooden roller and rolling it over the textured surface.

Repainting with Acrytex

Product information for Boysen Acrytex (which can be found on the packaging label, on the Boysen website, and Boysen app) says that it’s applied on bare concrete or surfaces previously painted with Acrytex. Why is that?

Boysen Acrytex should not be painted on top of other paints, specifically water-based and oil-based coatings, because it will destroy the paint film underneath it. This causes a paint problem called flaking which Pinoy painters call “nagchi-chicharon.” You may not see problems right away but after some time you’ll notice your Acrytex topcoat degrading as the layer underneath it flakes.

Acytex is known to be extremely durable and long-lasting, but you don’t get these properties when you fail to follow product instructions. If your home is already painted with a water- or oil-based coating but you would like to repaint with Acrytex, completely remove the paint film and clean the surface before applying Acrytex.
