“La Catedral” project given the go-ahead
Milan giants and bitter rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan will have a new home after the Serie A pair confirmed giving the go-ahead for the “La Catedral” stadium project.
“AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano are passionate about this project and committed to the fans, families, and community it will serve. This project offers a thrilling opportunity for Milan, providing the city with a world-class gathering place to celebrate its history, its future, its people—the heart and soul of Milan!.”
Finalized plans for the new stadium, which will replace the iconic yet dated San Siro, will be presented in the late months of 2022 but first impressions of the new ground to be headed by global architecture firm Populous are stunning.
El AC Milan y el Inter anunciaron que han seleccionado el proyecto “La Catedral”, de la firma Populous, para que éste se convierta en su nuevo estadio.

Set to be featured in a 50,000 square meter park that will also house underground parking, the Meazza Museum, and other entertainment opportunities and social gathering spaces, “La Catedral” is described on the project website as “…not a generic stadium that could be found in Moscow or Manchester, it is a stadium that draws inspiration from two of Milano’s most iconic buildings; the Duomo and the Galleria. It is a stadium of Milano and for Milano, set in the most sustainable sports and entertainment district in Europe. It is a new icon for Milano.”
As a leader in the social, economic, and political landscape of both Italy and Europe as a whole, Milan unquestionably deserves a stadium that reflects the magnitude of influence the city possesses as a beacon of art, commerce, design, education, fashion, and finance.
Inter & Milan fighting it out in Serie A
News that Milan is set to benefit a new stadium that reflects the stature of the city goes hand-in-hand with the current title race unfolding in Serie A this season between bitter city rivals Milan and Inter.
As current holders, Inter has moved on from Antonio Conte without skipping a beat under former Italian international striker Simone Inzaghi and currently top the table as they look for their first consecutive Scudetto since the 2009-10 season.
Milan, sitting just four points adrift of Inter and level with SSC Napoli in second, remain rejuvenated this season under Stefano Pioli after finishing as runner-up behind Inter last season but sat 12-points behind their heated rivals.
The pair already battled to a 1-1 draw in early November at the San Siro, and perhaps there was no better time to announce the new stadium project during a period of football renaissance in the capital of Lombardi.
