Football clubs have not been exempt from this, and Tottenham have already seen one of their games called off over an outbreak of the virus at their training ground, from which some of their first team are still suffering.
Since then, there have been confirmed cases at Manchester United and Brighton, as well as Mateo Kovacic of Chelsea and Brentford’s Ivan Toney testing positive last week.
And now, there has been an outbreak at Aston Villa, but perhaps not enough to see their preparations for their midweek clash with Norwich affected.
Gerrard confident game will go ahead
Speaking to the media, new manager Steven Gerrard revealed that it was likely that the game would go ahead, claiming:
“a couple of staff members and a couple of players”
“I haven’t changed any protocols, I have just listened to the guidance and tried to stick to all the guidelines,”
“I made the decision yesterday, because it was a recovery day, and because we didn’t have a pitch session, and on the back of receiving a couple of positive cases, I thought it was just common sense to just cancel the session.
“We re-tested this morning and we have got a couple of staff and a couple of players missing for the foreseeable future but the vast majority have come through the test this morning and we look forward to competing against Norwich tomorrow.”
This will come as a relief to the Premier League, as increasing cases nationwide threaten to severely disrupt the packed festive football schedule.
