We first heard from Abi Mia in June upon the release of the remix of her song “This Life.” That track introduced us to a talented London-based singer/songwriter with an inspiring story. When the pandemic forced her to pause operations at her fitness center Abi Mia realized that making music was her true priority. She followed her heart and now creates music with a purpose, providing uplifting themes and life advice to others as they too navigate their way through the strange reality of the 2020s.
“Shadow” is the latest single from Abi Mia, released worldwide to all major streaming services on September 17, 2021. The melancholy Pop ballad opens with the singer alone at her piano, accompanied by a lo-fi beat. As the song progresses the mix expands to include orchestral strings. Abi Mia matches the ebb and flow of the song, singing quietly in the verses and building to a powerful and cinematic sound in the chorus. She sings to an unnamed someone who has altruistically lost themselves in the needs of others and has become disconnected from their own life. It is a powerful message that points out the importance of balancing self preservation with selflessness.
I wrote this song as a reminder for us to take time to rediscover who we are as individuals, and not just who we are to other people. Looking after yourself isn’t selfish – it’s self-care.
