Volunteers Needed in Somerville to Lead “Good Bones” Fitness Class

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Peer Leaders 60 and older are needed for Project Healthy Bones, an Osteoporosis Prevention, Exercise and Education Program, according to Somerset County Freeholder Shanel Y. Robinson.

The one-day Peer leader training will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the second floor conference room, at the Somerset County Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren St. Peer leaders will lead workshops in teams of two using an easy-to-follow manual. Trained peer leaders are expected to facilitate one workshop per year. Refreshments and snacks will be provided during the training. Register by Nov. 18th.

PHB is a 24-week program for adults age 60 and above who either have osteoporosis or are at risk for developing the disease. PHB exercises target the body’s larger muscle groups to improve strength, balance and flexibility. The interactive educational portion addresses health topics such as exercise, osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment, medications, nutrition, falls- prevention and lifestyle factors related to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease that thins and weakens bones so they are more likely to break. An estimated 10 million people have osteoporosis, and 34 million more have low-bone mass.

Volunteer peer leaders should have good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to perform low-impact exercises. Two peer leaders will provide instruction and assistance to participants in the class as well as teach exercise techniques and provide information about the disease. All volunteers must pass a background check that will be conducted by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The Office on Aging and Disability Services is designed to streamline access and link seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers to long-term care and support services, health promotion, and education so these individuals can live independently.
