Before we get into the music, please let our readers know a little about yourself.
LUKA 120 : Luka 120 is a rising star from Pretoria, South Africa. My father was a fan of dancehall and reggae. Bob Marley and Peter Tosh were his favorites.
I was influenced by my father through listening to different kind of music. I am also the founder of Brandon Records and Shaka Zulu Records.
StreamLINE : When and how did your music career begin?
LUKA 120 : In 2013, I fell in love with African hip hop so ended up going to Lee Records. We then recorded my first project called Break up Music.
My first song on the album was called “I Heard”. That song opened doors for my music career. Master Lee produced the entire classic album.
Drunk in Monaco
StreamLINE : What inspired the Drunk in Monaco project?
LUKA 120 : I was in Durban South Africa Beach and was inspired by the south beach views. There was a different kind of music, the vibe, the beach, the clubs etc.
Where I am from we don’t have beaches but we have our own kind of music, like Amapiano, Barcadi and Venrap.
StreamLINE : There are a number of collaborations with other artists throughout the album, particularly with DJ Shaka Zulu and Damao. How did you link up with them to collaborate on this project?
LUKA 120 : DJ Shaka Zulu and Damao are both producers with different kind of vibes. I learn a lot through them.
DJ Shaka Zulu is one of my home boys, but we had never worked together before. I went to his studio and the rest is history.
With Damao, I had once gave him studio equipment to record his album, so he always wanted to do a song with me. The opportunity came around and we did a few songs.
StreamLINE : What is the background behind the track “Afrika”? You have a remix version on the album as well.
LUKA 120 : American producer, Stone Paxrone hooked me up with an American dance hall king named Kenyatta. We ended up collaborating on the song called Afrika.
Then through out promoting the song, he told me that he would add his father Henry, who worked with R Kelly on the hit song, “Step In the Name of Love”.
StreamLINE : What is the meaning of “Mabrugudlu”?
LUKA 120 : Mabrugudlu Is like saying sweet heart. I worked with my artist named MTJ produced by Damao
StreamLINE : “Where are You Now” has an electro-pop vibe to it. How did you come up with that concept and who is the vocalist on the chorus?
LUKA 120 : MC Calister from Zambia sent me the song to put on my album. He is a rapper and singer from Zambia. I liked the vibe of the song and we agreed that I would add it on my album.
StreamLINE : How long did it take to record the album? How was the recording process?
LUKA 120 : It took me three months to put out the album, as I was recording during the week, some of the song did make it to the album…

StreamLINE : What is your creative process like?
LUKA 120 : I can record up to three songs a day. I have more than 200 songs on Spotify and Apple Music
StreamLINE : What other activities do you enjoy outside of making music?
LUKA 120 : I run a NPO project, called Soulbent Project as well as Sinthumule FM, Makhadzi project and Lesedi tennis academy.
StreamLINE : Please name some artists/musicians who have influenced your musical style.
LUKA 120 : R Kelly, Usher, Rick Ross, Paul Ndlovu, Oliver Mtukuzi and myself.
StreamLINE : What is the independent music scene like in South Africa? Do you find it is receptive to up and coming artists?
LUKA 120 : It’s still difficult. We pushing daily! If you can’t promote your self no one will. It’s hard to be independent. Up and coming is not good at all, as your doing it all for your self.
StreamLINE : What are some countries you would love to visit?What is the best advice you’ve been given so far?
LUKA 120 : In the U.S., Los Angeles and New York; U.K. and South Korea. I think Los Angeles is wee I was perform more, network, go to festival, clubs. Miami is also good beause it has different kind of vibes.
Best advice is to keep on promoting your music, network, read more about music and understand the business
StreamLINE : Please tell us what’s up next for you?….any upcoming releases, videos, shows? Where do you see yourself in the next year or so?
LUKA 120 : I just did a remix for “Smashing my Neighbor” with American New York queen musician, Monique Nikkole.
The single is already out on iTunes and currently on radio. Next year I will release the album but will release singles as well.
“It’s So Easy to Love”, “Denga” and “Separated” are few singles coming early January 2020.
I wish to be signed, so that I can focus on my music, my clothing line. The 120 brand will be trending in the next year. I want to tour the world!
