5 Ways To Use Bold Rugs In Your Interior Design

The traditional advice for choosing a rug is to find one that will blend in with the room and surroundings. You may choose one with softer colors or a pattern that reflects the rest of the home’s decor. However, what if you want to make more of a statement? Many people love patterns and colors and those people would want to incorporate Bold rugs into their home decor.

Below are five basic ways that you can make a statement with a bold rug in a room:

1) Repeat a Color Based Off The Bold Rug Of Your Choosing

You may have heard the conventional advice to select a color from your room’s decor as the color for your rug. This strategy helps the rug to accentuate the colors of your artwork. However, this only works well with a relatively subtle rug.

If you want to choose a bolder rug, apply the opposite approach: choose the rug first, and then repeat its colors in the rest of the decor. The trick here is to avoid overdoing it with bright colors.
For example, you could have a bold rug, some neutral furniture and accent pillows that borrow the main color of the rug. If the rug is under a table, consider finding a centerpiece that mirrors a couple of the colors from the rug.

Consistency is key when planning a room’s color scheme. Simply match parts of the room to the rug, and you can make that bold pattern work.

One strategy for working with Bold Rugs is to add colors from the rug in other accents in the room.

2) When Placing Bold Rugs Keep Other Surrounding Colors Neutral

If you have a lot of colors in a room, it will appear overly busy. Rugs tend to take up a large portion of the field of vision. With a bold rug, it is easy to accidentally overdo it with color. The simple solution to this is to choose more neutral colors for other major elements of the room. For example, if you have a bold rug in a sitting area, choose a gray couch.

Of course, you don’t want to make the rest of the room bland. Bold rugs will clash with a completely neutral room. However, you should be thoughtful about which parts of the decor are neutral and which are bold. For example, you may choose an armchair that matches the intensity of the rug but keep the rest of the furniture more neutral.

When using a bold rug in your decor, one design strategy is to keep the rest of the room neutral.

3) Complement Bold Rugs With Rich Walls

Since a bold rug and a bland room clash, consider choosing an equally rich color for the walls. For example, if you have a super-saturated color in your rug, pick a deep gray for the walls that matches the intensity of the color without conflicting with it. Alternatively, consider a chocolate hue. If a rug is too bold compared to the other décor, it will wash everything else out. Finding ways to match the boldness of the rug can help to make it work.

Bold rugs are a great look with deep colored walls.

4) Choose a Monochrome Color Scheme

Matching colors can be difficult. There are so many options to choose from, it can become overwhelming. For an easy solution that looks beautiful, consider a monochromatic color scheme. In other words, choose a single color and use different shades of it throughout the room. If you pair it with white and another neutral color, the room will look amazing. For example, if you have a bold rug with a blue pattern, you could choose a less saturated blue for your furniture. You may also want to add an accent wall mirroring that color. As with all interior design, the key to this strategy is to find balance. If you have too much of the one color, it becomes overpowering. Use your neutral colors to balance it out.

Bold rugs look great when used in a monochrome design.

5) Find a Rug With a Bold Pattern but a Neutral Color

A bold rug doesn’t need to have bold colors. Consider using a rug with a vivid pattern but a neutral color palette. For example, you may choose a rug with an intense, two-tone pattern in natural colors. Pair this with furniture featuring bold colors but no pattern. This combination allows the rug’s pattern to shine without clashing with the rest of the décor. Another option is to choose a black and white rug. These rugs are the blue jeans of interior design; they can go with pretty much anything. However, when using this high-contrast style, you should still try to avoid pairing it with intense patterns in other parts of the room.

Consider choosing a rug with a bold pattern but a neutral color.
