Solnedgang: 116 Days Of Summer Guests

Hi, I’m Jon from Solnedgang.

While this project is quite new (it’s been going for just over a year
now), I’ve been playing guitar and creating music for years. What I’ve also been doing alongside that is graphic design, which has been my day job for longer than I want to think about.

In this post I wanted to talk about logos and branding, which arguably has become even more important in today’s (mostly) digital musical landscape.

Gone are the days when the biggest bands could get away with not even having their band name on the record cover (Pink Floyd,
Led Zeppelin). These days you need to be recognisable across Spotify, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and whichever other digital platforms you use.

In addition to that, you might need artwork that works as a tiny thumbnail online and as a 12” album in a record shop – maybe even
large posters/billboards in a busy city.

It’s important to visually link all the platforms we use, particularly if you don’t have a particularly memorable logo or band name (I wish I could give you some examples, but I can’t remember any…). Depending on the size of your b(r)and you may want to stick with one memorable/recognisable logo throughout your career, or mix it up for each album – if your musical style changes for example. You might want to fit into a musical landscape so listeners know what type of music to expect, or you might want to stand out in a crowded visual
landscape – the band Party Cannon are a great example of this (though maybe they have taken it a little bit too far…)

My point is, there is an awful lot to consider in addition to the actual music, so don’t be afraid to reach out to other creatives out there. In my experience most graphic designers are really into music, so there will be plenty of people out there who can help you with your logo, album
artwork or even a music video.
