Story:

The movie aims to address the deep rooted stigma in India  around homosexuality. Although homosexuality in India is decriminalised, people from the LGBT community find it hard to gain acceptance from family and society.  Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is the story of Aman Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar) and Kartik Singh (Ayushmann Khurrana,) a gay couple who reveal their orientation to Jitendra’s parents much to their chagrin and shock.  The rest of the story is about how Jitendra’s parents finally accept his choice to love Kartik.

Review:

The movie is set in Allahabad, where the Tripathi family stays.  Kartik and Aman visit Allahabad for Aman’s sister Goggle’s wedding.  The Tripathi family is taken aback by Aman’s choice for a romantic partner when he decides to display his love for Kartik at the wedding infront of all the guests.  Ayushmann Khurrana once again shines in the role of Kartik, a guy who was abused by his father during his childhood. Ayushmann and Jitendra Kumar, both of them subtly take the topic of homosexuality and break down the stigma surrounding it for the movie audience so they understand the trouble and pain a homosexual couple go through to find acceptance.

Director Hitesh Kewalya takes meticulous care to build up individual character arcs without affecting the pace of the movie and ties it up beautifully in the end.  Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao provide excellent supporting roles as the mother and father of Aman Tripathi, portraying the mentality of a small town family.

The entire movie is a family entertainer till the climax, which appears to be  rushed in order for the movie to reach a happy conclusion. The climax however does not take away the credit from the rest of the film which is beautifully told with some amazing acting talent.
