Getting Healthy: 5 Things I’ve Learned In The First Month

Getting Healthy: 5 Things I’ve Learned In The First Month

It’s been 6 weeks since I started trying to get healthy, eating right and going to the gym and in that time I have lost around 14.5lb.

When I first started this journey, I was doing it to make some healthy lifestyle changes and avoid picking up any illnesses due to being overweight.

I knew it would be a lot of hard work, difficult to stay motivated and not easy but never in my wildest dreams did I realise just how much of a difference it would make in such a small amount of time.

So here are five things that I have learned since starting this journey at the beginning of April 2019.

It is easier than I though it would be

After a lifetime of bad decisions when it comes to my diet and fitness, I thought it would be ridiculously hard to finally sort things out.

I knew that eating healthier and finding the motivation to go to the gym would be difficult but I was surprised to find that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Even after a week of making better decisions, I found myself not being tempted.

I even found myself actually preferring some of the healthier options too.

Weight loss isn’t everything

I used to think that getting healthy and going to the gym was all about losing weight but I have finally realised that it is about making better choices.

Choices that become a lifestyle change and make you feel more confident, healthier and happier.

I actually enjoy going to the gym

I’ve always hated the gym and always struggled to find the motivation to go.

I would find myself making excuses not to go, partly because I just wasn’t motivated but I think if I’m honest, it’s because it was hard work.

Now, everything has changed.

I feel happier in the gym, and dare I say it, I actually enjoy it. I find myself wanting to spend more and more time there!

Did I also mention that I also convinced Matt to get a membership and we have now started going to the gym and working out together.

How the hell did that happen?!?

My fitness level has increased really quickly

I started seeing the results of going to the gym very quickly.

Now, I find myself regularly increasing the intensity on the stationary bike and the cross trainer.

I have even started running too, which is something I have always hated.

The main thing is though, I can walk the dog and not have Matt slowing down to allow me to keep up with him.

I can also go for longer walks and I am generally more active around the house now.

My health was not as good as I thought it was

This is one of the things that I have struggled with the most since I started this journey.

Not because I didn’t feel well or had any illnesses that I was struggling with beforehand (other than my hip) but because it made me realise that I wasn’t as healthier as I thought I was.

Specifically, I haven’t had a proper period for around 10 years.

I thought it was because I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19 but about a week ago I actually got a visit from Aunt Flo.

After doing a bit of research into this, I’m not 100 per cent sure but it could mean that I was on the brink of diabetes.

Luckily, I decided to make these changes before it was too late and it looks like it is now starting to reverse itself so I should be okay.

Let me know what you have realised by beginning a journey to a healthier you?
