Shopping is an addictive source of happiness.  The desire to obtain an object gives a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.  When one purchases items of their personal choice, the body releases dopamine in the brain.  Dopamine, the neurotransmitter controls the reward and pleasure centers of the brain.  Shopping branches out as a form of rewarding oneself.  In particularly, it is our female counterparts who derive the greatest satisfaction from shopping.  To understand the sheer joy of shopping, you have to get into the shoe of a lady.  However, if you are in any of the states or cities of the Himalayan region, shopping will come to you spontaneously irrespective of your gender.

The Himalayan mountainous range is a provenance of natural beauty which has blessed the Himalayan States like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.  Each of these states has their distinct specialties which bespeak about their heritage, culture and tradition.  Let us find out what to buy and from where.

Himachal Pradesh can be called the ‘Apple bowl of India’.  You must taste the apples here.  It is the best place where you can purchase wooden objects and woolen work of puhla, shawls, patoos, caps and namdas.  The Mall Road of Shimla is the hub of streets and local markets.  The lower bazaar, the Tibetan bazaar and the Lakkar Bazaar will get you best deals.  The Mall Road is a commercialized station for all sorts of knick-knacks, woolen items, food and miscellaneous things like caps, purses, key chains, umbrella, toys, etc.  You can get some really exotic wooden crafts and artifacts at Lakkar Bazaar.   The Tibetan Market offers interesting imported objects from clothes to electronics.

If you heading to cities of Uttarakhand, you are in for a real treat as you will get memento of wood carvings, stone carvings, statues, handicrafts, scented candles, ethnic embroidered clothes, etc.  Collect Gharwali paintings and famous Basmati rice from Dehradun, Rudraksh pendants and idols of gods and goddesses from Haridwar and handmade candles, lac bangles and cherries from Nainital.

Jammu and Kashmir

Get your pen ready to jot down the authentic must-buys of Jammu and Kashmir.   The beautiful pashmina shawls stands synonymous of Jammu and Kashmir.  Collect the hand woven Kashmiri carpets, antique copperware, willow baskets, Kashmiri lac ornaments, flavorful Kahwa tea, walnuts and other dry fruits.  The fresh aroma of saffron is rare production, found mainly in Jammu and Kashmir.

If you travelling towards northeastern Himalayan ranges, you would be delighted to pick up fascinating relics.  Sikkim is famous for its fluttering prayer flags, which you can bring back home to spread goodwill in your environment.    The famous Thangka paining is a must have Sikkim souvenir.  Collect your prayer wheels, singing bowls, dorjee bell with thunderbolt which will spread positive vibration around your surroundings.  Ladies must not miss traditional silk and brocade Bhaku dress of Sikkim.  Being adjacent to vast tea estate of Darjeeling, Sikkim savors authentic tea leaves in many flavors.   Last but not the least, if you are a Momo lover, how could you leave behind Momo makers?  The copper based Momo maker would simplify the process of making Momos for your family.

Arunachal Pradesh
