Honest to Goodness Twilight Movie Review

The story
The plot of Twilight was designed to make tweens and teens swoon. The high school boy meets the new girl at school and they end up falling in love. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel lore, the guy being a vampire complicates things here. With this infallible plot, it’s no surprise that the film, like the book, became a huge commercial success.
Why did the film disappoint?
One of the key parts of why this movie sucked was the casting. Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan looked physically good together. However, their game requires a lot of work! Kristen sighed every time she had to deliver a line, and she batted her eyelashes for most of the film. Both ways irritated me, to say the least. I’m not sure if that was his own take on the character or if director Catherine Hardwicke advised him to do it. Robert, on the other hand, didn’t really act like The Edward Cullen. He looked like a normal human being in the movie. Aside from the fact that his face is powder white and he can climb trees, there was nothing extraordinary about him. Also, I have to say that I didn’t find Rosalie Hale (portrayed by Nikki Reed) to be extremely beautiful and graceful in the film, as she was portrayed in the book.
The effects also turned out to be another disappointment. Edward shimmering like a diamond in the sunlight while Bella gazed at him adoringly was one of the most poignant moments in the book. I was a little sad that Robert just looked like he was drenched in sweat in the movie. They actually had to do a close-up of his chest to make it look like it was “glittering” in the sun. However, the effect they were aiming for was not achieved at all.
Of course, I understand it’s a low-budget movie, so they can’t produce the best of everything. It’s especially difficult if the books are made into movies because they have to condense the storyline down to just three hours at most. But hey, having a low budget doesn’t excuse the people of Twilight for not thinking straight. How a man in a wheelchair like Billy Black (played by Gil Birmingham) can skillfully drive a truck really escapes my logic and inconsistencies like this could ruin any movie.
Good things
There are still things that saved this movie from total disaster. Billy Burke as Charlie Swan, Kellan Lutz as Emmett Cullen, Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen, and Peter Facinelli as Carlisle Cullen all delivered outstanding performances. They fit their respective roles and they really brought to life the characters I loved in the book.
Another thing that I found wonderful was the setting, which was in Forks, Washington. I have to say that this city is incredibly charming and it really does look like a place where romance can be found.
My younger brother actually liked this movie but I have a theory that if one hasn’t read the books you probably will like this movie. Even though I didn’t go crazy for the Twilight movie, I still look forward to watching New Moon. Hopefully having a new director at the helm might do wonders for the next installment – and hopefully they’ll be successful next time around.
