Top 10 Underrated Yet Brilliant Hindi Movies of 2020

In 2020, we have had a few “firsts,” many “lasts” and so many “never thought we would.” And one that tops the list here is “never thought we would” NOT go out for a movie for one whole year but still have hands on at the best releases. Yet it happened, all thanks to the gods of streaming! If not for them, this 2020 would have been way more dreadful and unbearable.

So before the year ends, let’s have a quick look at some of the gems that OTTs gave us. Here are some of the underrated yet brilliant movies of 2020 (in no particular order):

1. Unpaused:

Unpaused

This Prime Video’s original is an anthology that tells five stories of varied experiences of different people in lockdown including one futuristic story from the unmentioned time. Be it fear and anxiety over corona, loneliness caused by pandemic and isolation, bad mental state or economic despair caused by lockdown- this movie covers it all along with a hue of hope and a flicker of happiness.

2. Raat Akeli Hai:

Raat Akeli Hai

Radhika Apte was back on Netflix, along with Nawazudin Siddiqui and Shweta Tripathi, with this totally unpredictable and gripping who-dun-it plot. This close-room murder mystery has an unhurried air and lets you absorb each character leaving you more confused until the final revelation.

Despite being a murder mystery, the movie will spare you with explicit show of violence and abuse as the movie progresses with steady throbbing pace.

3. Guilty:

Guilty

Why should you watch Guilty? Well, a pace-y story that unveils details in meticulous deliberation, a melodious soundtrack that doesn’t overpower the storytelling and important dialogues that attempt to bring out the nuance of a power struggle of the #MeToo movement.

And yes, for better understanding of the concept of consent! It’s one of the most neglected and underrated movies of 2020 for sure. Do watch it.

4. Serious Men:

Serious Men

Manu Joseph’s brilliant work is translated into this Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer part-funny and part-ambitious film which is definitely worth a watch. The movie is about a Dalit man, who resents being invisible and amidst being subjected to daily humiliations and lucrative offers to convert, attempts desperately to make sure his child amounts to something big in life, this way or that way.

5. Ludo:

Ludo

This  multi-narrative movie is a work of art in itself. The way the screenplay is remarkably structured so that not only the central character is interlinked to each of the four stories but also has its own arc along with those other interlinked stories. Everything about this one is wonderful and intriguing.

6. Bulbul:

Bulbul

This supernatural horror genre tells the story of a wide-eyed child bride whose quest for a kindred soul and kindness pulls her deep into peril. The movie is an amazing mix of classic pre-Renaissance Bengal and desi horror gothic which makes for a wonderful gripping watch.

7. Lootcase:

Lootcase

This dark comedy is a satire, somewhat a cinematic-take at a middle-class man’s insatiable quench for wealth pitted against a rich man’s obsession to amass as much as he can – by fair or unfair means. The plot is great. So is the cast that includes Kunal Khemu, Ranvir Shorey, Rasika Duggal, Vijay Raaz and Gajraj Rao.

8. Choked:

Choked

This Netflix original socio-political film is a magic-realist metaphor for clogged dreams, and a striking satire on demonetisation and its effects.

9. Ghoomketu:

Ghoomketu

The only off thing about this movie is that it feels lost in other times. No wonder, the movie was about to release in 2014 but got delayed for some reasons. Other than that, this is a warm and fun movie about a man from the village of UP who has come to Mumbai to try his luck as a writer. The way the movie proceeds is amusing and entertaining.

10. Shakuntala Devi:

Shakuntala Devi

This biographical drama is based on the life of the famous child-prodigy mathematician Shakuntala Devi. The fun and entertaining narrative shows an eager and endearing Shakuntala Devi giving it her all and trying to pull off her shows despite all the odds in 1950s London and later how her personal equations take a back seat.
