Now that 2020 is crawling to its end, close your eyes for few seconds and imagine this year without OTTs. Scary, right? Let us all say thanks to all the tech-wizards of streaming, else 2020 would have been God-knows-how-much worse!
Well, OTTs really bloomed this year. And now it is proven that we don’t need to step out and go all the way to a crowded halls to have good, soulful entertainment. Just a seamless broadband connection, the exact company you want or rather none of it (whatever suits you best) and you are set for a good time.
To ensure that you have not missed best of the OOT’s offering this year, here are the top 10 best Hindi Web Series of 2020 (in no particular order):
This comedy-drama Series on Prime Video took our heart away within the first few minutes and we got glued for the rest of the series. As real as it can get, the Jitendra Kumar, Raghuvir Yadav and Neena Gupta-starring web series showed a very different side of young Indians with real aspirations and real life struggles.
If you have missed it somehow, go for it ASAP. Each episode in this Amazon series can be enjoyed as a stand-alone and yet it’s totally binge-worthy to say the least. It was indeed an absolute breathe of fresh air in the over-crowded web series world laden with violence and sex.
2. Scam 1992:
What can be said about this masterpiece? The fact that it is a real story, that captured the country’s collective imagination, makes it more a riveting watch. Our very own desi version of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ but all the more realistic, the web series chronicles around the rise and fall of Harshad Mehta, the controversial infamous stockbroker who became the face of India’s 1992 stock market scam.
Spread out in ten long episodes on Sony LIV, the show is exhaustive and detailed yet intriguing and gripping. Cherry on the top is the old world charm of the 80’s and 90’s times that adds a great deal of nostalgia. Not to forget the super-peppy foot tapping opening track. It’s the only time we skipped ‘skip intro’ (other than Game Of Thrones, of course)!
3. Paatal Lok:
With Paatal Lok, Amazon Prime Video out might have unwittingly outdone itself. A stunning achievement on virtually every level despite so many similarities and stereotypes, this multi-layered hinterland crime story was surely a treat to watch.
4. Mirzapur 2:
Mirzapur 2 surely aged well and came out more mature and intimidating as its prequel. A show set in a testosterone-fueled world where cuss words vie with dialogues for attention and killing someone is a creative pastime, this season on Prime Video was much-awaited and ranked high on viewers’ expectations.
This Netflix series took us to the hinterland of Jharkhand where a bunch of small-town semi-literate young chaps were operating a successful phishing racket. The fact that it is based on true incidents makes it more interesting and gripping to watch.
This eight-part Voot Select Original is precisely a misleadingly unassuming who-done-it which will unknowingly creep under your skin, and rattle your brains before you even realize. An unhinged killer on the loose, a series of encoded messages, dismembered bodies across places, a baffled FBI professor and a bunch of forensic experts- this web series was both mental and emotional exercise.
Asur is a human story about frustrations and doubts, pain and loss, anger and non-resolutions and failure. Do watch it if you happen to have missed it somehow.
Sushmita Sen marked her OTT debut with this one playing the role of a woman who discovers her innate toughness after the tragic death of her husband and learns to stay a step ahead of her sneaky, heavy-handed father and too ambitious-for-his-own-good brother.
This dark humor’s unusual subject matter makes it vastly different from other shows and web series on streaming platforms. The eight-episode series has a deadpan comic tone throughout as a man, who wants to die no matter what, hires a killer and then changes his mind about dying but the killer is hell bent to finish the assignment that she has taken.
A fun watch, especially for people with a penchant for dark side of humor.
9. Pushpavalli Season 2:
Modern times stalkers’ tale, Pushpavalli Season 2 shows the lead character back in Bangalore, older but no wiser. She is better equipped with a tag of an engaged girl and a fiancé to latch on to whenever required and is all set for psychological warfare. Her toxicity is everywhere- in her jokes, in her tears, in her words but still we ended up rooting for her.
10. Special Ops:
This Disney+ Hotstar web series is based on a 19-year-old chase to find the missing sixth terrorist in the 2001 Parliament attack, which no one believed exists. One of the most well-written series of the year with every minute detail in place, every episode manages to keep suspense high with much enthralling action sequences in place. Best part about the series is Kay Kay Menon’s wry sense of humor and flawless dialogue delivery.
She, Taj Mahal 1989, Bandish Bandits and Dark 7 White were also fabulous and are worth a watch.
Well, as the year went by, both in a flash and painstakingly slowly at the same time, it was good that we had these gems to keep us company in these tough times.
