Writing is Dangerous

Writing is Dangerous

– Nonfiction by Rachel Pintarelli –

Writing is Dangerous. It’s a broken bone mended wrong. A healing scab you pick until it bleeds. It opens wounds and forgets how to close them. Instead, leaves it gaping. Unforgiving of what erupts inside of you. And once the words come, the cavern unearthed, the unfinished business of your life starts following you around like a tired old ghost that once was at rest. But no rest comes because that door is wide now. Wide and open and flowing a river of remembrance and a tidal wave of “what if” and “what was”. Plagued and broken by it every time. Alternate endings. Restarted beginnings. Paper thin visions of what plays in your head like a spun out reel of a worn flickering film. You pick more, thinking maybe the bleeding will cleanse and close it. That the screen will go dim and the images fade grey. Yet there is the push-pull of so wrong, so right – to drown your soul headfirst into an ocean of memory. How odd a thing that art starves on happiness, and thrives on sorrow. That pain feeds it and molds it and shapes it. Yet the happiness robs it. But to balance is the challenge. To hold on, grip firm, knuckles white and not let the sting of what drives the madness of the words pull you down into the pit where it lives. As the story plays on and on like a poorly tuned player in your head. A whining carnival of voices urging you. It twists and turns insisting it can draw you in and out at will, while you fight to keep the unclaimed baggage of yesterday from infecting your today. To find a way to not pick the scab so deeply. To trust the bone will mend. To control the turning of the knob that lets the darkness in, all the while insisting it is light. To overcome what sleeping demons lay, now awake, feeding your words. Writing is dangerous.
