Mini Itx Cases – what good are they?

Mini ITX cases are completely opposite of what full tower Personal cases are. They are made for extremely small mini ITX motherboards. Some of these cases can be amazingly small and can even fit inside of a home theater cabinet. However, the tight quarters may create issues of compatibility with some of the hardware. You would most likely not have to end up using any sort of liquid cooling or a big noise making cooler for a CPU in most of the mini ITX cases. And be aware of hardware incompatibility issues, for example, some of the mini ITX cases will not be able to support a full-length graphics card.

So, before you end up buying a graphics card, make sure that you have verified the maximum length of the card. And finally, there is not going to be a lot of extra room for any extra hardware you may be hoping to put in as these have a real space constrained chassis. This means that you will have to satisfied by fairly very basic configurations. They will though be awesome for some schlepping Local Area Network parties.

What should you look for?

The first thing you want is that it should be thin, if possible, in almost like a console type of enclosure. It should be very lightweight, portable and it can either be stood up or laid down on its side. It would be awesome if you can remove the slim optical drive. This would mean that the GPU is less completely compartmentalized from the rest of the case and it is a great thing. Look for slots in the chassis for cooling and the more you can get those closer to your video card, the better will be your cooling. It should also come with some slim fans, so you do get enough room to pretty much fit in any card that you have to. There should also be some breathing area along with a fan on the other side too. The case may be small but it should have been very well designed and thought out.

The case of the case

ITX basically comes in two categories. You have like the NZXT which is really just a small ATX box. It is hardly a small form factor because those cases are large enough to fit small tower coolers, they can fit in all kinds of CLCs most of the time. ITX, on the other hand, has a very small factor. They are targeted to a completely different kind of market. That puts a lot more impetus on the case company to design it really well with the space that they have because a mini ITX case is roughly the size of a DVR or an Xbox. There is not a lot of space in there and that comes down to case engineering and design to make sure you have enough room for cables where you can and air flow options where you can.
