Desiccant Dehumidifiers – How do they work

A Desiccant Dehumidifier of consumer grade is constituted of different critical components. These are described below:

The desiccant

This by itself is the most crucial of the components of a desiccant dehumidifier. In most simple terms, a desiccant is really a chemical which adsorbs (and not absorbs) the moisture. To add to that, the desiccants which are used in the desiccant dehumidifiers have the ability to release the very moisture when they are heated. This capability of not only absorbing moisture but in releasing it as well when heated is absolutely important for the correct functioning of desiccant dehumidifiers. Hence, using the same process by which physical and chemical properties of any chemical refrigerant allow for the correct working of the dehumidifiers based on compressors, the physical and chemical properties of the desiccants make for the correct working of the desiccant dehumidifiers.

A large drum that rotates

The drum is almost the same width as dehumidifier itself, just thick by an inch or so (this depends on the model and the manufacturer). It is constructed out of alternating layers of corrugated and flat sheets that are then impregnated with a desiccant. These sheets happen to be so arranged that will allow airflow that is perpendicular when seen from the orientation of the drum. This desiccant rotor or the drum work in removing the moisture from the incoming air of the room.

A condenser

It is made out of plastic and it is about as wide and long as dehumidifier itself. This also functions in condensing moist warm air.

A heater

The sole function of the heater is to get the air reheated.

One or more blowers

These work in moving air throughout the entire system. Most of the desiccant dehumidifiers that are commercial grade showcase one large blower at the back of dehumidifier. This pulls the air in through the front of the dehumidifier and throws it out from the top of the dehumidifier. Many of the units also are equipped with a second small blower which helps in circulation of the air which is moved along the zone for recharge of the drum of the desiccant.

The Process

The rotor of the desiccant (the big rotating drum sitting at the center of dehumidifier) has two separate zones – the process zone that makes up around 75% of the total area of the rotor and a zone for recharging that makes up remaining 25% of the rotor. The humid, warm air which enters dehumidifier gets pulled along the process zone. Here, the moisture gets absorbed by desiccant material. The incoming air that is humid goes through a process zone and is immediately exhausted out of the dehumidifier. A heater covers the recharge zone of the rotor. This warms the humid air that is being circulated and which gets pulled back along the drum of the desiccant in the reverse direction than the humid air that is coming in. The warm air (that is heated by a heater) oozes out the moisture from the desiccant.
