This Man Spent 5 Months Swimming Around Great Britain And What He Experienced Is Chilling

Recently a 33-year-old swimmer and fitness expert, Ross Edgley, returned from an epic 1,780-mile (2,800 km) journey. Ross spent 5 months at sea and is believed to be the first person to Swim around the island of Great Britain.

Ross is not new to extreme challenges. In January, he attempted to swim 100km in the Caribbean carrying a 100lb tree. Later that year he accomplished the world’s longest rope climb in less than 24 hours. He managed to climb the height of Mount Everest — 8,848 meters (29,029 feet). On June he decided to embark on a new challenge – The Great British Swim.

The journey didn’t come without a cost. To have enough energy for the swim he had to consume 15,000 calories per day. Within the first few weeks of his quest challenges began to arise. “I woke up this morning with chunks of my tongue on my pillow,” Ross said in one of the video updates he made throughout the journey. The athlete was suffering from what is referred to as “salt mouth”, caused by the build-up of salt water on the tongue. Later he developed severe chafing on his neck. Another unpleasant surprised followed after that. “Just when I think I’ve got this whole thing figured out… jellyfish!” Ross said. However, jellyfish are nothing compared to swimming with sharks. “I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about sharing the swimming pool with a basking shark,” he admits.

While these 157 days at sea were extremely exhausting and challenging, Ross managed to break 4 world records during this amazing feat. The records include – the first person to swim the entire South Coast of the UK, the longest ever staged sea swim, the fastest person on the planet to swim from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and the first person to swim around Great Britain. After his victorious swim, Ross returned to England and was warmly greeted by a group of fans who swam the last miles next to him. Scroll below to see how this amazing journey unfolded!

Sorry in advance 😐 The harsh reality of spending hours, days & months at sea swimming #greatbritishswim 😊 Excited to get back on land (once we finish this cheeky swim in 600 miles) 😊 where I’m going to be working (and documenting) my foot rehab with the heroes at @vivobarefoot as I basically learn to walk (and run) again after the tiny ligaments, tendons and muscles in my feet and legs have atrophied (shrunk) from over 100 days at sea (a similar physiological phenomena that happens to astronauts from months in zero gravity) Maybe a #greatbritishswimrun 😊But first, let’s finish this cheeky paddle around the country 😊
