It was like a scene out of a gangster movie. On Tuesday night Chennai Police nabbed a group of history-sheeters who were into revelry at the birthday bash of a notorious rowdy. Around 75 rowdies were caught as the police gate-crashed the discreet party on a tip off. It took nearly three hours for the police to catch the rowdies who scampered away on seeing the cops and hid themselves in places nearby. Seventy five rowdies in a single hunt is sort of booty to the Chennai Police and most of the history-sheeters were wanted in various crimes, mostly, murder related crimes.
Police spotted some two-wheelers and cars scurrying past in the Vandalur bypass and grew suspicious. When they enquired a guy in one such vehicle, he- in booze- voluntarily spilled the beans. He said that they were going to the birthday bash of their ‘leader’ Binu. Binu, who was actively engaged in crimes in Chennai in the years close to 2000, is a notorious rowdy wanted by police in many cases. Police grasped this opportunity quickly and got the whereabouts of the party.

In a swift action the police alerted cops in the proximity. A 60 member strong police team was constituted. In hired cars cops reached the Malayambakkam village in the outskirts of Chennai. At 9 pm, they gate-crashed the party venue, a lorry garage. On seeing the police rowdies ran scattered on all directions. Some hid themselves in the bushes nearby. A number of history-sheeters jumped into the tank next to the garage. Cops followed them into the muddy tank and literally fished the goons out. All were arrested at gunpoint.

The village people were happy to assist the police in finding the rowdies. According to police sources a total of 150 persons-all suspected to be anti-social elements- were attending the party. The number of escaped rowdies is around 75 and Binu is one of them. Four special teams of police are after these escaped goons. The police also recovered sickles and axes, along with 8 cars and 38 motorcycles from the scene.Although exact figures of the cases pending against each rowdy are unknown, they will be investigated and profiled before being remanded, police said.
In cell phones recovered from the rowdies police found pictures of the birthday bash. Binu is seen cutting the cake with a sickle in one picture. Some fake press ID cards also were found. Though people appreciated the police for nabbing rowdies en masse, some were critical about the laxity of the cops in containing them. They ask how is it possible for the rowdies to assemble in such a way while there is a special police force in the State to monitor movements of the rowdies. Is this incident rather a mark of police’s negligence than its unfailing duteousness? The Chennai police needs to ponder over this question.
