Ed Sheeran Wins Grammy For Best Solo Performance, Internet Goes Beserk

It was the night all music artists worldwide look forward to the whole year. The 60th Annual Grammy Awards took place last night at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. Among all the wins was Ed Sheeran’s win for the Best Solo Performance of the year for his ultra-famous Song, Shape of You.

While fans greeted this news with much fanfare, a huge furore erupted on Twitter following the announcement. The fact that Ed Sheeran won the award while being nominated alongside four women was just one of the reasons for this. But some were even upset because his song Shape of You, however hummable, actually contains lyrics that objectify women.

Ed Sheeran shared the nomination sheet with Kelly Clarkson (Love So Soft), Kesha (Praying), Lady Gaga (Million Reasons) and Pink (What About Us). Many argued that each one of these is a better artist than Sheeran, which is what outraged them when he bagged the coveted trophy.

The anger was not helped by the fact that the other songs in contention featured mature lyrics, and tackled important themes. While Praying is about coming back after sexual assault, Million Reasons is about heartbreak. Pink’s What About Us talks about the government and today’s state of affairs. And on the other hand, Shape Of You is a song that describes a woman’s body.

The Grammy Awards show however is pretty used to such controversies. Lately, not a year has gone by when something hasn’t been criticized. Ed Sheeran himself apparently boycotted this year’s show for being snubbed in other categories. Same goes for his good friend Taylor Swift and even Drake.

Heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold also decided to skip the Grammys this year due to the very little importance that rock music is given at the event. They questioned why the Best Rock Song award – for which they have a nomination – is not televised and is instead presented during the pre-show ceremony.

The story remains the same this year. The Grammys generated lots of buzz for all the wrong reasons. Will it be any different next year? Tell us what you think?
