Modi Says Even Selling Pakodas Is A Job, And Why The Congress Disagrees

Modi Says Even Selling Pakodas Is A Job, And Why The Congress Disagrees

In an interview to Zee TV, PM Narendra Modi answered criticism over not creating enough jobs by saying a pakoda seller earning Rs 200 a day should also beconsidered employed.

Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for claiming that people Selling Pakodas could also be considered employed. By that logic, he said, even begging is a job.

“Let’s count poor or disabled persons who are forced to beg for a living as ‘employed’ people,” Mr. Chidambaram said on Sunday. The BJP responded by saying that the former Finance Minister had insulted the poor.

In our country, where Gandhi cleaned toilets and taught lessons of dignity of labour, discounting pakoda vendors as undignified labour, and comparing them to beggars is based on faulty logic.

Though the case may be made that nobody takes up Selling pakodas a career of choice, yet there is some dignity attached to a job done with certain effort and skill. Whereas begging is a desperate condition, to which some unfortunates are reduced. Some take to it as an easy way of life out of a miserable lack of opportunities.

So, while the government should be made responsible for creating better standards of life and enabling opportunities for those reduced to begging, there is little argument in saying that all those selling pakodas are engaged in worthless work.

The BJP has thrown the barb at Congress for saying that they are not congruous of the fact that a chai-wallah became a Prime Minister. Their dynastic politics does not account for traditional jobs in India.

At the same time, the BJP government cannot take this escape route out of the unsatisfactory job creation for the poor. The dismal employment scenario is leading to a situation where young people are starting their careers on a negative note marked by loan defaults under the Mudra scheme. It is simply because that there are not enough jobs in market.

We can’t judge what’s a better career for anyone else. If selling food is giving livelihood to people, then it’s their choice.

The government is responsible for creating enabling life opportunities for the citizens. And Modi should answer this pertinent question.
