Pooja Chopra Plays An Army Captain In Aiyaary, But Do You Know About Her Own Battle?

Former Miss India and actress Pooja Chopra is busy gearing up for her big release, Aiyaary where she plays the role of an army captain leading 4 men for a covert operation. Pooja Chopra shares, “My character in the film is of Capt Maya Semwal, she is a strong headed army captain and is leading a team of 4 men on a mission. I’m thankful to Neeraj sir that he thought of me for the part.”

While she plays a brave strong woman in the film, did you know that in real life too Pooja has been a fighter ever since she was a 20 days old infant? Pooja was 20 days old, when her father asked her mother to make a choice-kill her child or leave the house! Pooja has an older sister and her father wanted a son but when her mother gave birth to her, Pooja’s father and his family members refused to visit the hospital! Her mother raised both of them single-handedly and in an earlier interview, Pooja mentioned about how her mother struggled to bring them up.

Perhaps it is watching her mother brave it all that has also helped shape her character in her upcoming film Aiyaari, directed by Neeraj Pandey. It’s not unknown that women in India have often fought hard to find a foothold in places which are dominated by males.

In the Armed forces too women face a lot of difficulties to achieve a proper space. Pooja through her character wants to reach out to all and urge to live their passion. The strong character played by the actress is an ode to all the strong women who find their foothold in a place dominated by men.

Pooja says, “Last year in October, Indian Air force got 3 female pilots Mohana Singh, Bhawana Kanth, and Avani Chaturvedi, to fly the supersonic fighter jets. This is for the first time women were appointed to pilot a jet in the air force. It is commendable how women are taking over to protect our country and finding a place for themselves in the armed forces. The film is an ode to women like them.”

India sure does need more women like Pooja and her mum!
