What You Need To Know About Blood Pressure?

If you remember your high school biology books well, you’ll probably recollect what Blood Pressure is. Basically, the heart pumps blood, through veins, to different parts of the body, right? Now, in order to ensure that the blood flows at a steady rate and reaches all body parts, a certain pressure has to be maintained.

Professor Tom Marwick says, “Blood pressure is probably the most important risk factor in our lives.”

As most of you might be familiar with blood pressure and how it keeps fluctuating within the body. Now, every human being has a standard, normal blood pressure. Any irregularities could result in high or low blood pressure.

Some salient factors about Blood Pressure

Well, we all know what blood pressure is and how it affects you. But there are certain important things you need to know about it. These are:

Systolic and Diastolic Pressure

Think of the heart like a pump, pumping blood day in and day out. Now, when the heart pumps blood in and when it pumps it out, there are two different kinds of pressure recorded. Usually, when a person’s pressure is measured, there are two numbers. For instance, 124/84 mmHg. The first number represents the systolic blood pressure and the second number represents the diastolic blood pressure. That is followed by the unit of pressure. The systolic blood measure is when your heart contracts, and that is your highest blood pressure. The diastolic blood pressure is taken when your heart expands, and blood pressure is at the lowest.

Blood Pressure Fluctuations

Any fluctuations in blood pressure or a sudden rise or fall in pressure is called high and low blood pressure respectively. None of the conditions are favorable and could lead to a number of other ailments. Moreover, high or low blood pressure could be a symptom of some underlying conditions which include hypertension and cardiac disorders.

Stress and BP

At present, stress is one of the leading causes of fluctuations in blood pressure. In the times that we are living in, every second person you meet today is plagued by stress. Work, personal relationships, environmental conditions – all take a toll on us both mentally and physically. Increasing stress affects your blood pressure, causing it to rise.

“Did you know that high blood pressure caused by stress often leads to heart attacks?”

Lifestyle and BP

What most people fail to realize is that blood pressure can be kept in check by leading a healthy and active lifestyle. By creating a work-life balance and including some exercise in your daily routine, you should be able to keep a tab on your blood pressure.
