A place of relaxation, rest and tranquility are what best describes the lakeside. Whether you want to camp or stay or just enjoy a bonfire or put your feet up and chill, there’s no other place as peaceful as lakes. We’ve put together a list of some of the best lakes in India for you to go and rest your tired soul.

Prashar Lake: Himachal Pradesh

Prashar is among my favorite lakes. It’s a lake you will fall in love with at first sight. Located about 50 km away from Mandi, the lake is untouched and blue surrounded by lush greenery. Vidhu Vinod Chopra was among the first filmmakers to have shot a song for his film Kareeb at the Parashar Lake, making the lake famous. There is a PWD guest house if you want to spend a day or two at the lake and one can even visit a charming and quaint little town called Rewalsar which is close to Parashar lake.

Gurudongmar: Sikkim

The Changu lake is the most visited and more popular lake in Sikkim as every tourist season the lake is swarming with tourists. It’s the Gurudongmar located at a height of 5,210 meters above sea-level, that is unexplored and beautiful. Located in the northern part of Sikkim, Gurudongmar is also a sacred place for the Buddhists and Hindus alike. You need a permit to go to the lake and the drive from Lachen to Gurudongmar is quite an adventure but once you reach the lake, and see the breathtaking sight, you will forget the difficult ride up.

Tam Dil: Aizawl

Located close to Kolasib, about 6-8 hours away from the Aizawl in Mizoram, Tam Dil is a beautiful lake. It is a very popular spot for picnics and fishing alike. However, the ride to Tam Dil from a place called Saitual is a bumpy one! But the lake surrounded by patches of poinsettia and lush mountains makes it all worth the bumps. There are a few cottages where you can stay the night and they also provide boats on rent, but it’s advisable to carry your own food as there are no restaurants around.

Sattal : Uttarakhand

Hidden among the pine and oak trees lies the beautiful Sattal lake which is also a home to the migratory Himalayan birds. Not many people, except avid birdwatchers, are aware of this lake. It is an interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes namely; Sita Tal, Nal Damyanti Tal, Ram Tal, Lakshman Tal, Panna Tal, Sukha Tal and Purna Tal. Located just 33 km from Kathgodam, it’s also a great place for kayaking and angling, both of which are organized by Uttarakhand tourism.

Chandratal: Himachal Pradesh

This is an offbeat lake and as the name suggests Chandratal, which means Moon, is as beautiful as the moon! Located around 10 km from Kunzum Pass, it is one of the calmest and most serene lakes in India. It is a beautiful place for campers, there are many retreats and campsites to choose from.

Berijam Lake: Tamil Nadu

The beautiful Berijam Lakes is one of the most preserved and maintained water bodies. Located at the end of Pillar Rocks Road,21 km southwest of Kodaikanal Lake it’s a long drive into the wilderness. Here too you need a permit to visit. A natural beauty with most of the water surface covered in lilies. You will be able to spot porcupines nestling in the bushes too!

Wular Lake: Jammu and Kashmir

Though the Pangong Tso in Leh Ladakh and the Dal Lake in Srinagar are the more famous lakes in Jammu and Kashmir, the lesser known Wular lake is one of the richest waterbodies in the state in terms of history and culture. Not just that, it’s a beautiful place to experience the local life at the local homestays by the side of the lake.A rich variety of birds and fishes can also be seen at this place. It is also one of the largest freshwater lakes in India and Asia.

Lakes are a wonderful idea to go and calm your mind.
