When it comes to relationships, ‘We’ comes before ‘Me’ and that’s something which is difficult for most of us to relate to. Juggling between the heavy words of independence and self-respect, we often forget that above all these, we keep our egos.
Popular singer, Mariah Carrey and choreographer Bryan Tanaka called it quits recently after only three months of dating. According to TMZ the couple allegedly parted ways due to Bryan’s extreme jealousy. Egos lead the green demon inside your head and that’s what happens if you let them be.
Having a self-esteem is not wrong in fact it should be nurtured but when it goes beyond, it can be harmful. Dealing with your ego is not easy but if not taken care of, can hamper your personal as well as professional life.
There are a few simple ways how you can keep your ego at bay in case of relationships:
– Don’t Think You’re Mr. Right
One of the most common causes of problems between couples is partners never admitting to their mistakes. First, pop the bubble in your head that tells you that you’re always right. Secondly, give the other person a chance and listen to their point of view. Being a better listener will help solve most of your problems.
– Take A Back Seat
It is important that you accept that you’re not perfect. Let your partner take the lead when you know they are right. Taking a back seat doesn’t make you a loser it just makes you sane and will give your relationship the necessary balance where the responsibilities are divided amongst the two of you.
– There’s No War
You are not competing against your partner and hence there’s no ‘winning’ or ‘losing’ involved. To make this relationship work, you must be able to open up to them fully. Don’t keep scores of who did what and when. The outcome you want from this relationship is for both of you to be happy.
– Learn To Be Selfless
Being selfish will take you nowhere. A relationship requires people to look beyond themselves and consider the duo to be a unit. Not in the classic Bollywood line of ‘Do jism ek jaan’ types but in more mature ways. Appreciate and accept things beyond your comfort zones. Align your interests for a healthy social life.
– Don’t Win Arguments, Win Hearts
Winning an argument just to satisfy your ego is not beneficial to anyone. Instead, learn to Win Hearts with a ‘agree to disagree’ attitude.
