UPSC’s civil services are considered one of the most challenging exams in India. You have to go through three stages: prelims, mains, and interviews to pass this exam. The Prelims exam consists of MCQs of General Studies. Today we will talk about the preparation of these General Studies, i.e, how to prepare GS In UPSC. This year, UPSC’s Civil Services Preliminary Exam is on 5th June upcoming. Qualifying in this exam is based on marks scored in General Studies only, whereas the CSAT paper is only qualifying. It is to be noted that the provision of one-third negative marks is also applicable in both papers.

Talking about the General Studies paper, its syllabus is quite comprehensive. However, since the passing of the Preliminary Examination is to be done through general studies, it is necessary to pay special attention to the preparation of this paper in the remaining days under a particular strategy.

Make a strategy based on the previous year

If we look at the cutoff for the last five to six years, it goes up to an average of 105- 112 marks out of 200. So out of 100, 52 to 56 right questions have to be attempted. While preparing for General Studies, it is also essential to keep in mind that questions from all the subjects are of an intense level. They demand a basic understanding of the subject. Therefore, the candidates must have a hold on those subjects in which they are deeply interested. Therefore, read any one essential book of all subjects.

If we look at the nature of questions, many such questions are found, which are asked by connecting the essential topics with the contemporary ones. To ensure success in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, one must go through the questions asked in the Preliminary Examination in the last six years. Therefore, more attention should be given to those subjects, from which there has been more tendency to ask questions in the last years.

Prepare GS In UPSC: Every year there are more questions from specific topics, such as History of Modern India, Art Culture, Environmental Ecology, Current Events of National and International Importance, etc. So it would be better to pay more attention to all these subjects. However, the most significant role in this question paper is of current events of national and international importance. This section consists of 30 to 35 questions directly or indirectly. In this, questions are asked by connecting contemporary events with Science, technology, geography, political system, policies of the government, etc. All these questions are no less than a challenge for the candidates.

What should be the strategy?

For the Preliminary Examination, first of all, go through some level books. For example, along with all NCERT books, Science, etc. KM Laxmikant (Political Science, Art, and Culture), Nitin Singhania, Oxford Atlas (World Geography), Ramesh Singh (Economy), Rajiv Ahir ( history of modern India), etc. Read good newspapers and quality magazines daily for current affairs and general knowledge.

Pay special attention to a few points to prepare GS in UPSC

• Don’t read anything new in the last 20 days. Revise only your notes and especially current ones.
• Cover the sections from which you tend to ask more questions and keep revising them regularly.
• Cover all Indexes by International level such as UNESCO, World Bank, World Economic Forum, etc. Awards received by an Indian at the global level, covering significant treaties and agreements at the national and international level. Must see the topics related to the respect given to Indian women etc.
• Particular focus on India’s freedom struggle, Amrit Mahotsav year, and art culture in history.
• It is better to revise a few books again and again than to read many books and notes.
• Keep solving practice sets regularly, at least twice a week. While solving the practice sets, the same strategy should be followed in the examination hall.
• Keep distance from social activities (internet media etc.) because it is the biggest obstacle in regular study and concentration.
