Idowu Philips popularly known and referred to as Iya Rainbow or Mama Rainbow, is a Nigerian veteran actress, Movie director and producer . Most Yoruba movie fans doesn’t know this woman as Idowu Philips as they are fond of calling her Mama Rainbow or Iya Rainbow.
Early Life and Background
Idowu Philips or Mama Rainbow or Iya Rainbow which ever name you want to call her was born on 16 October 1942 at Ijebu Ode, a city in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. Her stage name is “Iya Rainbow” stems from “Osumare” (meaning “rainbow” in British English), the origination of this code name is that it’s the name of the theatre group of her late husband, Sir Hubert Ogunde, who died in 1990. Idowu Philips biography states that she is originally from a native of Ijebu Ode in Ogun state.
Iya Rainbow’s Education
Idowu Philips completed her primary and secondary education in Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, South Western region of Nigeria. After obtaining her senior secondary school leaving certificate, she proceeded to nursing after getting admitted into the nursing school. She has worked or over 20 years as a certified nurse before she ventured into the movie career.
Movie Career
Idowu Philips worked as a certified nurse in general hospitals in Nigeria for many years and she was occasionally involved in acting because she acted in theatre. She officially joined Nollywood after the death of her husband and she ventured into full-time acting. She developed strong passion for acting while she was working as a nurse , her later husband was the founder of Osumare theater group, from where Iya rainbow started as a stage actress.
While she was juggling her nursing work with acting career, she often find time to movie locations to shoot movies while she was also working as a nurse. She retired from Nursing at the age of 45 in year 1986 and joined his late husband theater group fully on the advice of the late Yoruba movie icon- Hubert Ogunde. Since 1986 when she started acting, Yoruba actress Idowu Philips has become the Pillar of Yoruba movies and she has featured in several Nigerian films, including Apaadi, Eru, and Aje ni iya mi among others. She has five children.

Her first appearance in a movie was a movie titled “Eru”, and “Aje ni iya mi”, but it was the movie – “Asiri Nla” that shot to stardom and brought her into limelight. She will mark her 76th birthday on the 16th of October, 2019. She has starred in over 500 movies in her movie career inclusing both Nollywood and Yoruba movies.
Personal Life
Idowu Philips is blessed with 5 children, one of her children Femi has also joined the movie trade and he already has some popular movie flicks to his credit. She had some controversial times some time ago in year 2003 precisely, she was reported to have accidentally hit and killed a commuter with her car in Oshodi, Lagos Nigeria. But with God’s grace upon her life, she was able to pull through the controversies.
