Nikki Amuka-Bird is Nigerian-born British actress of the stage, television and film. She is one of the most popular and highly respected actressin the world today. Early Life and Background

Amuka-Bird was born 1976 in Delta, Nigeria where her biological father still live till date. She moved with her mother when she was a little girl to England and in Antigua where she grew up into an adult. She was single-handedly raised as an only child by my mother, Patricia, who was a single mother, because she got separated from her father while she was very small.

Amuka-Bird is from a polygamous family and she has seven half-siblings which are her father’s children. She has a half-brother, Amiku, now living in the UK, they got to know each other not long ago.

She was birthed in Nigeria, where her father, Sam, lives. Her father is editor of the Vanguard newspaper in Lagos. Her father met as journalists, her Antiguan mum worked for my father. Her father made his journalistic name during the Biafran war.

I had only known him through what my mum told me, so it’s a strange time for me, as my mum died just over a year ago. I have to remind myself she’s not physically here: I can hear her commenting and advising so clearly in my head.

I stayed in Lagos until I was five. I remember my mum was involved with Ophelia, her fashion magazine. We could go into the living room, and there would be a photoshoot with somebody beautiful. Mum couldn’t be there all the time, so from her travels she would bring back videos of films like Singin’ in the Rain or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. She taught me to read from the video recorder: the first words I read were play, stop, record, rewind and fast forward.

The Omen (2006 remake), Cargo, Almost Heaven as well as the screen adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith’s novel The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Talking about the television aspect, she has successfully appeared in Spooks, The Last Enemy, Robin Hood, The Line of Beauty, Torchwood, and a recurring role in the reimagined BBC apocalyptic series Survivors. In 2010 she appeared as Det. Supt Gaynor Jenkins in the BBC’s Silent Witness.

She was heard as the voice of the Glass Woman in the Doctor Who Christmas Special “Twice Upon a Time” broadcast on BBC One on 2017 Christmas .
