His real/full name is Alexander Abolore Adegbola Adigun Alapomeji Ajifolajifaola but better known by his stage name 9ice, is a Nigerian musician who is best known for his hit song “Gongo Aso” off his sophomore album . 9ice has been describe by many as one of the most versatile, unique Nigerian singer as a result of his proverbial lyrics and unusual style of Music. His ability to use Yoruba language sets him apart from most artists in his genre and in his words, “this is what makes him nicer than other Nigerian indeginous musicians”.

Early Life , Background, Childhood

Alexander Abolore Adegbola Adigun Alapomeji Ajifolajifaola who preferred to be seen as 9ice as his code-name, was born on 17 January 1980) . 9ice hails from Ogbomoso in Oyo State but he grew up in the district of Bariga in Lagos. He was born into a large family , a polygamous home of five wives and nine children. His talent in singing was noticed by his parents a year after he made up his mind to become a professional musician. According to 9ice, he wrote his own songs dating back to when he was just 14 years old. 9cie revealed that he is  a big fan of “Pasuma Wonder”, he kick-started his singing career with Fuji music before shifting.

When he came of age to start school, he was enrolled into Abule Okuta Primary School and CMS Grammar School Bariga for his secondary education. The top Nigerian singer is a school drop out just like many Nigerian entertainer, he dropped out from his Law course at the Lagos State University to concentrate on music. In a recent chat, he revealed that a drew inspiration from his environment, and music legends including the likes of Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Adé, Tatalo Alamu, Late Alhaji Ayinla Omowura, Late Alhaji Haruna Ishola. His music career started off proper immediately after dropping his debut demo , he later joined a music group called “Mysterious Boys” with whom he did a couple of tracks before going on to form his own, now defunct, group “Abinibi”. 9ice recorded his first demo titled Risi De Alagbaja in 1996 and his first song as a solo artiste “Little Money” in 2000, his music started gaining recognition in 2005 .

Music Career

His music career kicked started after he recorded his first demo, 9ice joined the group Mysterious Boys, with whom he did a couple of tracks before going on to form his own, now defunct, group, Abinibi. Having recorded some songs like “Risi De Alagbaja”, in 1996, “Little Money” in 2000, his first song that gave him fame was “Little Money”. Soon after that, he did collaborations with different Nigerian artists that prompted the release of another hit single, “Ganja Man”. Id.Cabasa produced this single, which was released with other songs in March 2006. The song became as instant hit because of its reggae tone and the playful style of the song made . After some successful year in his career , he thought it wise to found his own record label called “Alapomeji Records” under which other albums was released .

When his hit song titled Gongo Aso was released everything changed in his career. This song was released off his sophomore album, Gongo Aso, became a major breakthrough for 9ice as it became a sort of national anthem in all neighborhood in Nigeria. Gongo Aso was the song in every mouth and was sang at almost every event in the country at the time. Apart from “Gongo Aso”, there was other banging hits in this albums which include “Street Credibility”, “Party Rider”, “Pamurogo”,”Photocopy” , “Wedding day” etc. 9ice was worked with several top music merchants in the country including Ruggedman, Davido, Lord of Ajasa , 2Face Idibia, and amongst others.

9ice has won several awards including “Best Hip Hop Artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards in 2008”, “the Revelation of the Year award” and “Best Male Vocal Performer” at the third edition of the Hip Hop World Awards held in Nigeria, A month later at the first “SoundCity Music Video Awards”, he was nominated in the category of “Best New Artist”. 9ice’s biggest single is titled “Gongo Aso”.

Live Shows And Achievements

9ice is one of the prominent Nigerian musician that has been featured in many shows since 2007 which is few years into his professional career, he was featured in Soundcity/MTN Campus Blast tours; Lets Go There Tour With Ariya Entertainment in NY, LA, Chicago, Houston, Maryland in 2008; Star Mega Jam in 2007-2010; and London Troxy in 2008 and 2010. He was also one of the musicians that performed at the Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Tribute concert (singing “Gongo Aso”) in London on 27 June 2008. The aforementioned shows and concerts were sold-out events . In addition, 9ice has also headlined sold-out shows in the Netherlands and Malaysia in October 2010 to mark his country’s 50-year anniversary of independence. He went on a European tour through parts in 2010 where he touched countries like Italy, Spain and Switzerland. The ALapomeji Records boss has also performed live in Cyprus at Lions Garden .

Personal Life – Wife And Children

In July 2008, 9ice married his heart rob named “Toni Payne”, he reportedly met her through a mutual friend, Ruggedman. Their union produced a child. In 2010, 9ice announced his separation from his wife. According to 9ice, the marriage crashed due to infidelity issues. We gathered that his controversial song ‘Once Bitten’ was directed at Toni Payne’s perceived romance with Ruggedman but the remour was debunked 9ice.

Political Ambition

In January 2014, 9ice made his intention to venture into politics known to the general public, he ran for political office in 2015 as a House of Representatives member representing the Ogbomoso North Constituency, Oyo state in the National Assembly. He contested for the seat under the umbrella of the APC but lost at the party primaries. He was later appointed special adviser to the governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi which many perceived as a compensation for his lost.
