Yinka Ayefele is a top Nigerian music producer and gospel singer. He is popularly called gospel Tungba-higlife musician , he is one of the most versatile Nigerian gospel artiste who sings in Yoruba,English,Hausa and Igbo language. The indigenous gospel musician is one of the most popular and respected gospel artiste in the country today, he has 15 sound albums to his name and has won over 200 awards.

He gained recognition in Nigeria Music Industry in 1997 after involving in a ghastly accident that almost took his life, he managed to survive the automobile crash but his spinal cord was totally damaged . The highly spirited and energetic gospel artiste . He confined to a wheelchair because the accident left his spinal cord totally damaged.

Early Life And Background

Yinka Ayefele is one of the oldest Nigerian gospel singer today. According to his biography, he was born over 43 year ago and the first born of his parents. Ayefele was born and raised in Ekiti State southwestern Nigeria , Ipoti, a city in Ekiti State precisely. His passion for music ignited at his early age before he was involved in motor accident that left him confined to a wheelchair . He completed his basic education at “Our Saviours Anglican Primary School, Ipoti-Ekiti” ( primary and secondary education) , he later furthered at “Ondo State College of Arts and Science at Ikare Akoko, Ondo State Nigeria” where he bagged a diploma.

He had a stint at Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Ibadan where he worked briefly as journalist and broadcaster , he also produced jingles and musical works on radio. His music career kicked off professionally in 1997 after he was involved in an automobile accident which destroyed his spinal cord and confined him to a wheelchair determined never to walk again .

According to Ayefele, “I started music since when I was in secondary school. I used to be a member of the Boys Brigades in my hometown where I played trumpet. I started playing guitar when I was in the choir. I actually developed the talent in music when I joined FRCN in Ibadan by producing jingles for programmes and so on. This was the time I discovered I had the potential in me especially when I had the accident and I had cause to raise funds, I discovered that I could work in the music industry full time.”

He also disclosed that music wasn’t his childhood ambition because he didn’t really plan to become a musician in the future . His childhood craving career was to become a banker or work in a firm as a clerk. He became a chorister at his young age and joined the church choir to cement his relationship with God, music came as a joke because his parents wasn’t in support of him going into music professionally because music wasn’t really paying off in those days and it was like a waste of time.

Career Inception And Fame

After working as journalist and broadcaster at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Ibadan and producing jingles and musical works on radio. His professional music career came into play in 1997 after involving in a sad motor accident that denied him of ever walking again. He was in the hospital for about nine months receiving medical attention , his friend, Kola Olootu visited and advised him to put some songs together because he was already aware of his musical talent. After composing songs for about one year, he finally released his debut album titled, “Bitter Experience” in 1998 which brought him into limelight. He used the album launch event to raise fund for my treatment. The money he realised from the album launch was used to seek further treatments outside the chores of Nigeria.

Ayefele’s situation after the 1997 fatal accident changed his life both negatively and positive, it was after this accident that Yinka Ayefele music career started professionally and he suddenly became a household name. He often call his music ‘Tungba Gospel music artist’ his songs are a blend of Gospel, Juju, Fuji and sometimes Makossa beats. The acceptance that his first album received gave him the motivation to release his second album titled “Sweet experience”. eventually, things has twisted around for his good because what was suppose to be a disadvantage in his life gave him more advantage that he was able to outshine people without disabilities. He has gone to release several albums including “Inspiration”, “Gratitude”, “Aspiration”, “Divine Intervention”, “Prayer point”, “New Dawn” amongst others.

He has won several awards and nominated for many, he won “The Entrepreneurial Award 2003”, by City People , a Lagos based soft sell magazine. He was nominated for the award for “the Most Valuable Gospel Artiste in Nigeria” by the organisers of The Somolu community award. Regarding this, he said, “it is a welcome development. In that, it shows that people appreciate what one is doing. And this will really make me work harder for God to win more honors and souls for him. I am grateful to God and those who find me worthy of honors and I will not forget my family and members of my band”. He has also received “Member of the Order of the Niger” awarded by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and “Ekiti cultural ambassador award”. He had received over 200 awards.

Last year [2016], rumor went round that Yinka Ayefele has converted to Islam. According to Gospel Tungba crooner, Yinka Ayefele, has debunked the claim that he has converted to Islam. The news of the conversion to Islam of the music prodigy went wild like an inferno with fans both home and abroad making calls to find out if the claim is true. According to a release issued by his Publicist, David Ajiboye said Ayefele is still a Christian and has no reason whatsoever to renounce his faith and belief.

The statement said: “We believe the rumour must have emanated from the annual Ramadan Lecture, which Fresh 105.9FM, owned by Ayefele, organized on Tuesday, in Ibadan. “Our station, Fresh 105.9FM had invited popular Islamic preacher, Alhaji Muideen Ajani Bello, as the Guest Preacher at our annual Ramadan Lecture which had over 4,000 people in attendance and because of this, some naïve minds went to town to spread the rumour about Ayefele’s conversion.”
