The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its second lunar mission in 2019.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to Launch its second lunar Mission in 2019. India’s space agency has said that it will launch ‘Chandrayaaan-2’ sometime between January 03, 2019 and February 16, 2019.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address set 2022 as the deadline for the launch of India’s maiden human spaceflight programme, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has said that it will honour the PM’s wish.

The mission will aim to send a three-person crew to space for a period of seven days where they will do microgravity experiments.

“The total programme cost is expected to be less than Rs 10,000 crores. Two unmanned Gaganyaan missions will be undertaken prior to sending humans to space,” ISRO chief K Sivan told reporters.

“The total programme is expected to be completed by 2022 with the first unmanned flight within 30 months,” he said adding: “The mission will aim to send a three-person crew to space for a period of seven days where they will do microgravity experiments.”

The mass of Chandrayan 2 has increased to 3.8 tonnes and will be launch by GSLV-MK-III. Addressing the media, the ISRO chairman said, “Mass of Chandrayan 2 has increased to 3.8 ton which can’t be launched by GSLV. We have redefined launch vehicle to GSLV-Mk-III. The window for launch is 03 Jan-16 Feb. It would be the first mission in the world going near the South Pole, i.e. 72 degrees South is landing site,” reports news agency ANI. The spacecraft will be placed in a low earth orbit of 300-400 km.

The mission will take 16 minutes to reach the orbit at a distance of 450 km from the surface and it will take 36 minutes to return to Earth due to various safety measures

“This is most ambitious space programme taken up by ISRO till date and essential as it will give a big boost to the Science and Technology development within the country,” ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan said.
